Book Description

June 16, 2009 Brandon Blake Mysteries
This first book in a new series is set in and around the Portland, Maine, waterfront. It introduces Brandon Blake, a loner who lives on his old wooden cruiser. Raised by his alcoholic grandmother after his mother was lost at sea, Blake learned to depend on himself. During an assignment for a law-enforcement class, Blake gets involved in a fight and is marked for payback by a soon-to-be-released convict. Meanwhile, questions surface about his mother's disappearance.

More About the Author

Like many crime novelists I began my writing career in newspapers--the best training ground ever. After Colby College, I knocked around, including stints as a roofer, a postman, and a manuscript reader at a big New York publisher (thumbs up for the roofer gig, thumbs down on the publishing job).

My first reporting job was with a weekly in the paper mill town of Rumford, Maine. It was there that I left my sweaty mark on high-school wrestling coverage. But there was lots of small-town crime in Rumford. I would later mine my Rumford time for my first novel, DEADLINE.

After a few months it was on to the daily Waterville, Maine Morning Sentinel, where editors gave me a thrice-weekly column and I wrote about stuff I saw in police stations, courtrooms, in the towns and cities of Maine.

And all the while I was making up stories on the side, typing away on a Smith-Corona electric typewriter.

DEADLINE came out in 1993and the books came steadily after that. McMorrow and I grew up together, though at different rates.. I continue to live in a small village in central Maine, making regular trips for book research. My deal with Jack: I'll send him into some pretty dangerous places, but I'll scout them out first. I walk point; Jack has my back. Brandon Blake and I are still feeling each other out.

5.0 out of 5 stars New series...new adventures ahead! Thanks, Gerry!, June 11, 2009

Port City Shakedown: A Brandon Blake Crime Novel (Brandon Blake Mysteries)

GREAT NEW SERIES FOR GERRY BOYLE! Though I was not in a hurry to read this book (my husband surprised me with a just-released first volume) I found it very tough to put down.
I'm a big fan of Boyle's Jack McMorrow series; probably because it smacks of reality, takes place in the small rural Maine county where I live (so I should know!), and features an engaging and very likeable character who keeps pushing forward when many would quit.
I frankly did not expect to like the new character, Brandon Blake, nearly as much as I did. What a great surprise! After chewing through the story, I couldn't wait for my husband to read it...I knew he'd like it as much as I did. One great proof of how good a book is is how in depth we discuss it later. We both are looking forward to the next one.
For you Boyle fans, Jack McMorrow he's not, but Brandon IS a fresh, young and delightfully mature young man who doesn't quit when the chips are down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Hit from Gerry Boyle, June 2, 2009
This review is from: Port City Shakedown: A Brandon Blake Crime Novel (Brandon Blake Mysteries) (Hardcover)
I just finished reading Gerry Boyle's newest book and, like his other books, I couldn't put it down. I was interested to see what Boyle would do with a new main character after enjoying the previous Jack McMorrow series. Brandon Blake is a great new character for Boyle - he can keep up with the action that makes Boyle's books so fun to read. This book also gave Boyle a chance to show a different side of Portland. I could picture every move Blake made and enjoyed imagining his life on Casco Bay. Now I'm looking forward to more from Boyle with Brandon Blake. This one's a definite must-read!

The hero here just feels right. Feet of clay. Needs growth. Not any abnormal excessive baggage. This could be fun following this series. The losers rang true. The heroes could be people we know. Good job.
