4.0 out of 5 stars PACKA50 Review, January 19, 2011
This review is from: Port-a-Cool (PORPACKA50) KuulAire KA50 Personal Evaporative Cooler for 250 Sq. Ft. Capacity (Misc.)
I think the KA50 does a great job at what its designed to do. Since I live in Arizona, it is very dry here. I end up using it all year round. In the summer its used to cool the house down and the winter to add humidity to the air since its on the extreme side of dry. When the manufacture states 350 sq ft, they mean it.

Since it does hold a lot of water it can be a pain to fill so I use a hose from my laundry sink. If you don't have one you can use a fish water siphon in reverse direction. There is a meter that tells you how much water is in the unit (Min - Max). It's just a float connected to a piece of plastic pushing the meter up. FYI if the unit is empty or very low, the float can tend to get stuck and end up overfilling the unit because it will still say Min when its full. A simple tap on the machine looses the float and you are good to go. Something to keep in mind but wouldn't deter me from buying.

The unit has 5 casters on it and move with little effort on tile or carpet. (no complaints here)

Sleep mode: I don't see myself using this all that much. All it does is cycle through low, medium, and high fan rates and can get a little annoying with the varying noise levels since there is a drastic sound difference between low and high.

Air direction is easy to control. There is a button that allows the system to pivot left to right or stationary. The vertical control is adjusted by manually moving the vertical fins up and down in pre set positions that they snap into. (no complaints here)

Size: Large. Upon ownership I was wowed by its size. I know dimensions are posted but when you look at it in a store vs the room its going in, it changes perspective greatly. Not something that would deter me from buying, just something to keep in mind. Measure for where its going before purchasing.

It has a removable filter on the back. Basic design. Snap off, clean, snap back on. (no complaints here)

Timer: again, basic. You have an option for 1 through 8 hours incrementing 1 hour at a time.

The unit can be used for cooling (with water pump on) or just as a fan (you guessed it, water pump off).

Has a remote and a cradle to hold it when not in use. (reduces the change of remote getting lost)

It has an extremely powerful fan and has a knob that you can adjust to control how much humidity to add to the air. My only complaint is that it is a little on the loud side.

All in all it's a great machine and does what's advertised. If you are using it in the same room you are sleeping in, you might want to use ear plugs, lol. As stated earlier it's not exactly the quietest piece of equipment in the house. For best use I would probably use it while you are at work or have the machine in a different room blocking some of the noise. Watching TV with this unit next to you isn't exactly an easy task. It is not meant for smaller rooms as the output of this machine is large. Very high output levels. It's more for a living area than a single room or a whole apartment. FYI, if you have high humidity levels in your area, any evaporative cooler will be useless. They are meant for dry climates.
