Editorial Reviews

2010 release. The Fisherman's Friends are shanty singers--each of whom are or have been fishermen, lifeboatmen and coastguards (as well as builders, artisans, hoteliers, and shop keepers) in the local area--from Port Isaac on Cornwall's rugged north coast. At around eight in the evening during the summer months, tourists and locals gather to hear this ten-man group sing a rousing set of shanties and Cornish folk songs. This album, recorded in a 15th-century church in nearby St Kew, features a rich haul of 12 songs from their Port Isaac repertoire, including the classic 'South Australia', the haunting Cornish robber ballad 'The Cadgwith Anthem' and the beautiful 'Brightly Beams'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Authentic taste of the sea May 29, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
On England's windswept north-west coast is the fishing town of Fleetwood. There they manufacture a lozenge called Fisherman's Friend. With its menthol and eucalyptus, this fiercely strong lozenge is just the thing for sailors and fisherman braving cold, wet weather. They have however reached a wider consumer base, in part no doubt, due to their fun name.

Down on England's equally windswept south-west coast is the fishing village of Port Isaac, where a 10-man group of singers entertain in a local village pub, singing seafaring songs a cappella. Three of them are fishermen and the others serve in the coastguard or lifeboat service. So they are the real deal. They adopted the fun name of the lozenge, hence the titles of their first two (self-released) albums, "Suck'em and Sea" and "Another Mouthful From...The Fisherman's Friends".

They now have a recording contract and this album is the result. It too, is the real deal. The songs are from a variety of sources, including the whole of the British Isles and the Americas. One of their most famous - and my favorite, with its enigmatic lyrics and catchy tune - is The Cadgwith Anthem, which is sung here a cappella, twice in fact, the reprise being a live recording.

Most of the tracks have an instrumental backing, which caused them and their fans some trepidation. I think the results are first rate. The recording quality is excellent throughout, and the instruments enhance but never overwhelm the singing.

The solo voices are not always note-perfect, though they carry a tune well enough, and that actually adds to the authenticity. Their harmonies are splendid and often surprisingly elaborate.

The net result is a generous helping of seafarers' songs which warrants a place in every music collection. Why, it's almost enough to make me want to leave my warm home and go to sea. Almost.

3.0 out of 5 stars Over Produced. July 7, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I got this because I had heard a series of fantastic and amazing renditions of a variety of sea shanties from this group on You Tube. Usually they were live performances and filled with energy and passion. I couldn't wait for this CD to come!! The CD I got barely resembled the original group.

Instruments where none are needed, and auto-tune is on full in various places. The entire CD is like a beautiful woman who wears WAY too much make-up. I am still on the search for a live CD of these amazing singers, so that I can skip the garbage that some technician plastered all over it.

I heard a song of theirs on you tube and really enjoyed it. I bought this CD as a Christmas present for my brother, and he was very happy with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Raw traditional English folk music November 28, 2011
Format:Audio CD
This review is for the 22-track special edition released in 2011, which includes the 12 tracks released on the original album, six further studio recordings and four live versions of songs for which the studio versions are also included. Based on the Amazon track listings, some of the six additional studio cuts have been released on their other albums while others appear to be previously unreleased.

Folk music, especially of the traditional variety, generally has a dedicated following in Britain but does not normally appeal to the masses. Discovery by a DJ who took a chance on them enabled Port Isaac's Fisherman's Friends to reach far beyond the hardcore following. Their success is all the more remarkable because they are a group of middle-aged men who look as well as sound about as far removed from the image of a successful musical group as one is likely to find. Then again, that is the basis of their appeal.

On this album, they perform a selection of seafaring songs, opening with South Australia, which is a traditional song that the Seekers recorded in the sixties, but the version here is very different. Plenty of other folk singers have also recorded this song, but most of the other songs are not so familiar, and you are likely to also recognize Shenandoah, When the boat comes in and What shall we do with the drunken sailor? You may also recognize Pay me my money down, previously recorded by both Pete Seeger and Bruce Springsteen. Looking at the other tracks that they've recorded, I wonder why their version of Sloop John B (previously recorded by Lonnie Donegan in the fifties, by the Beach Boys in the sixties and by plenty of others) wasn't included among the extra tracks. Well, I plan to buy more of their music anyway, so I expect I'll eventually hear their version.
