Editorial Reviews

Review

``An excellent selection of recipes. It's the next best thing to having a bakery shop aboard. Thanks for making my sea meals much more enjoyable.'' (Romack, Floyd BOC Around-the-World sailboat racer )

From the Back Cover

Freshly baked food on the trail or on deck? Sure. It's always been possible. Now it's easy, with an abundance of inexpensive, lightweight portable baking devices that are easy on fuel and turn out baked goodies quickly.

Jean Spangenberg evaluates them all, then shows you how to use them to produce such delights as sourdough breads and rolls, English muffins, hush puppies, crumpets, biscuits, cornbread, muffins, crepes, and dessert breads and cakes. Her secret is simplicity, and her reassuring advice will give even the newest baker the confidence to turn out great food. Here are 100 recipes guaranteed to take the monotony out of trail cooking.

As proprietors of Adventure Foods, Jean and Sam Spangenberg have supplied trail foods to Iditarod dogsledders, round-the-world sailboat racers, Antarctic explorers, mountaineers, and river runners. They know the value of good food and the importance of proper nutrition. Each of these field-tested recipes is accompanied by detailed nutritional information, including dietary exchanges for diabetics, and the option of using fresh or dehydrated ingredients. Why deny yourself?

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know about camp baking., March 7, 1999
This review is from: The Portable Baker: Baking on Boat and Trail (Paperback)
Comprehensive and easy to read, this book explains the various techniques and equipment available for camp baking, and gives wonderful recipes. The Chinese steamed dumplings were a revelation on our trip, and we *loved* the fresh bread. If you're a cook who camps, you need this book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't get too excited about this one, February 2, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: The Portable Baker: Baking on Boat and Trail (Paperback)
The most valuable part of the book is the product reviews; the recipes, however, have little or nothing to do with the products or with "baking on boat and trail." I mean, I don't know about you, but I don't need a recipe that makes 3 loaves of bread when I'm camping. The product reviews are available on line; save your money.

I have made quite a few of the recipes out of this book, and they were all great! More than just recipes, the book inspires you to think creatively about what food you can actually take and make while camping.
