The ice stored in the insulated storage bin melts and is steadily recycled into more fresh ice.

I've had this product for 7 months. I've used it regularly & had absolutely no problems at all with it. Except for the initial start up (which only lasts a couple of minutes) it runs quietly. It makes ice fast, the first batch is usually ready within 5-10 minutes and each successive batch takes about 4-6 minutes on medium sized cubes.
I use the medium sized cube setting, though there isn't a lot of difference between the 3 sizes. The ice will be wet because this is an ice maker, not a freezer. This isn't a problem if you are going to use the ice right away. It comes with a handy little scoop too. If you want to store the ice for later use, you will need to freeze it before adding it to an ice dispenser. I just pour the ice into gallon sized zipper freezer bags & stash them away. It's simple to separate the cubes after they've hardened up a bit. I usually pour them into the ice dispenser in my refrigerator freezer at that point.
I bought this ice maker because we have a big family & lots of guests and our ice maker in the refrigerator freezer has trouble keeping up with demand. This is the perfect solution. You can make ice quickly as needed or make it & store it ahead of time.
We keep it out on the counter all the time. Most people think it's a bread maker. I have found it to be quick, quiet & dependable. I'm very satisfied with it. For the money spent on it (less than $200 including shipping) I consider it one of the best appliance investments I've ever made.

This is part of an email I wrote to technical support for this appliance. ....I recently returned an Emerson portable ice maker. It was an "out of the box" failure.. I purchased it to replace a Koldfront which I have had for less than a year before it crashed.....same machine., but marketed under 2 different names!!!!!!!! You were kind enough to send me a replacement ice case, which I installed over the course of 2.5 hours to fix the Koldfront!!! It was working fine for about 90 minutes until the blinking red ice light started up....Nowhere in the troubleshooting instructions provided with the machine is a dreaded blinking red light indicated....You sent me pages of instructions to attempt to correct the problem.....The problem is still there...Folks, I can't make repairing this machine my life's goal..... It is not an issue of money....It is principle....This product is extremely poor quality.........A warranty of 90 days for function.....attests to the poor quality of this appliance....attesting furthermore to MANUFACTURER'S lack of confidence in the product ...... I would love to have said that Compact Appliance (Edgestar?) support is wonderful. Alas, that is not the case.....If you can't fix it yourself after 90 days you are out of luck.....Perhaps a simple mailing label to return the item would have gone a long way for customer support for an otherwise poor appliance!!!!

I ordered this portable ice maker for my husband serving in Afghanistan. He recieved it in good shape after I mailed it to him. He says it works perfectly and makes enough ice for him and some friends. The ice maker itself is a little on the heavy and very bulky side. I had a lot of trouble getting it out of the box it came in. But, it is a good value compared to other more expensive models.
