Portable electronics are the fastest growing area of the dynamic consumer electronics industry, but developing successful products is extremely difficult. Between interface and size issues, portable electronic present some of the toughest design and engineering challenges in all of technology. This book breaks the complex design process down into its component parts, detailing every crucial issue from interface design to chip packaging, always keeping the reader focused upon the key design parameters of convenience, utility, and size that make or break a product in the marketplace.

Editorial Reviews

Review

This tutorial for product designers and engineers offers guidance on the development of consumer portable electronics that, presumably, won't drive users crazy. That means the designer must understand how to shepherd a product through all the marketing, manufacturing, and procurement people who have a hand in development. Haskell(an electronics product design engineer) discusses the marketplace, the economics underlying product development, and the features customers do and don't like. He offers detailed information about the engineering of products, with attention to interface and size problems, convenience. and utility parameters, technology trade-offs, and durability.. 4.0 out of 5 stars numerous issues in making portable devices, June 18, 2006
This review is from: Portable Electronics Product Design & Development : For Cellular Phones, PDAs, Digital Cameras, Personal Electronics and more (Hardcover)
Haskell explains the numerous issues involved in making a compact electronics product, where typically this might be for a mass consumer market. Such considerations include what type of display to use, assuming of course that there will be a display. Maybe LCD, which dominates portable devices. But Haskell also reminds the reader that other display technologies are rising and deserve consideration, like polymer OLED or electroluminescent or field emission devices.

You should pay attention to the chapter on power sources. For usability, the power source should be as long lasting as possible. The choice you make here can be crucial to your product's success.

Nor are the issues all electronics and chemistry, as raised above. The mechanical aspects of putting together the device in a robust and ergonomically appealing framework are nontrivial. Think cellphones or even wristwatches.
