Book Description

June 1, 1992 Culture and Technology
As an artifact of culture, the portable radio is an unusual but perfect subject for investigation by archaeologist Schiffer. Seeing the history of everyday objects as the history of the life of a people, he shows how the portable radio has reflected changes in American society as surely as clay pots have for ancient cultures.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Schiffer has melded the hobbyist and archaeologist. . . . As a work of social history, The Portable Radio in American Life is eminently worthwhile."—USA Today "Schiffer has a breezy writing style, which makes a book that could have been deadly into something amusing and enjoyable."—Past Times

Elegant and well-written, this is one of the few books to take a realistic look at American popular cultural technology. Historians and archaeologists coupld learn a lot from this case study.

IF you want to know anything and/or everything there is to know about the evaluation of Portable Radios here in the US, this is the book to have. He starts out in the 20's with information about "portables", radios with heavy batteries strapped to Bicycles and buggies, to the present with Shirt pocket and smaller radios. Lots of Photos of Popular 40's & 50's models. A great book for a person who Collects old Radios.
