Better Than The Homemade One I Built!
on December 8, 2012
I bought one of the Portal guns soon after they came out, and immediately wished I had a stand to display it on. At the time there was no announcements of any stands coming out for the gun, so I decided to make one myself using black-lacquered wood as a base, some copper piping for arms and pipe insulation for a soft surface to rest the gun on. Well, it figures that they would finally come out with a nice(r) "official" display stand for all us Portal gun owners; as it would also figure that Amazon would drop the price 15 bucks a week AFTER I already bought mine!
As the other reviewers have stated this display stand is ALL plastic, but so is the Portal gun, so it's definitely durable enough to display what it's meant to display. The circular base is 13 inches in diameter, which IMHO, is unnecessarily large. 10 inches would have been sufficient, especially if they weighted the bottom. This large base will definitely limit most peoples display area options, so you may need to "feng shui" (which literally translates into "wind-water"; I didn't know that till just now!) your room a bit.
Lastly, the little "Aperture Laboratories" logo plaque in the front was a little dull and uninteresting for my taste. So to add a little personal touch, I reworked a design of my own that I had laser engraved on a piece of black aluminum for my old, homemade stand. This time however I had it put on a piece of blue aluminum to somewhat match the color scheme of the plaque that comes with this stand. If interested, I submitted a couple of pictures up top so you can see it.
This is one of those simple products that either does what it's suppose to do or doesn't...and this one DOES! If you have a Portal gun, then yeah, you'd probably want to spend just a little more to display that nice, fancy Portal gun you plunked down so much moolah for on this display stand; and if you don't have a Portal gun (or at least know someone who does and could use one of these as a gift), I have no idea why you would be looking at this display stand or even reading this review?!
