Book Description

Preston Johns Cadell is tormented. He attempts to outrun discontent and the void in his heart. His mother is hardly around. His father’s origins and disappearance are shrouded by family secrets. His sole remembrance of his father is flying through the stars nestled in his arms.

Any comfort Preston derives is from an unseen advisor who teaches him of the invisible world. Now he is coming of age. Memories arrive from long ago when a brown-skinned woman cared for him. But she, too, vanished. Finding the buried remains of his father’s altar, Preston must answer the draw to his destiny, to discover his lineage—even though he has no idea how or where it will lead him.

Portals to the Vision Serpent is a Hero’s Journey into the realms of shamanism and the Maya world. Interwoven are the struggles of indigenous peoples to preserve their way of life and tragedies that often come from misunderstandings. Through a family saga of dark wounds and mystery, spiritual healing unfolds.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivaing novel June 29, 2013
Format:Paperback
I have had the pleasure of knowing Carly Woody for several years, seeing her periodically at NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) conferences. She has consistently exhibited her passion and love for the Mayan people - an ancient culture struggling to survive. I have learned much from her lectures and have always been impressed with her focus and vision as she brings these cultures to life for us here in the "civilized" world.

In this, her latest book, she presents a captivating novel that describes the plight of the Mayans using characters such as Mama Luna. In the Author's Note, she reveals that her descriptions of culture and tradition are largely factual, as seen through her outsider's eyes. Any reader interested in knowing more about these ancient peoples will have access to a wealth of information - and plenty of drama - in these 286 pages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Portals to the Vision Serpent September 25, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A truly engaging and mystical account of personal loss, confusion, search and discovery. I couldn't put it down. The combination of the mysterious behaviors and disappearance of the husband/father; the longing for resolution by wife/mother, Sybilla; the spiritual quest of the son,Preston; and the link to Maya traditions produced a very compelling story.

5.0 out of 5 stars ...to your Authentic Self July 28, 2013
By Jan B.
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Moving forward to find our Authentic Self sometimes requires the wisdom to return to our ancient roots. If we follow our heart's longing and show up without knowing the outcome, perhps we have taken the most important step in Re-membering what we know (but have forgotten).

And so it is with Preston's journey in Guatemala and Mexico as his biggest challenges become his best teachers and the authors of his deep healing. His experiences amongst the indigenous people also raise awareness of their current struggle to retain native culture and way of life.

I highly recommend Portals to the Vision Serpent, a Story-Weaving that will place many threads in the hands of the reader. Like Preston, they will be ours to do with as we please. How will you weave the next chapter of your Authentic Self story?

5.0 out of 5 stars Challenging Personal Paradigms August 14, 2013
Format:Paperback
Having read each of Carla's books, she never ceases to amaze and challenge one's paradigms. The title she chose for this latest book is indicative of the openings it provides to question one's own spiritual possibilities. In all of Carla's work, there is the opportunity to enjoy, appreciate, and learn through exposure to more esoteric spiritual dimensions. I would heartily recommend Portals, as well as her two previous books, to anyone interested in stretching the boundaries of preconceived or culturally based beliefs about spirituality.

5.0 out of 5 stars A journey not to be missed. February 19, 2014
By D. G.
Format:Kindle Edition
The characters in this mystical story held me throughout its beautifully written pages. I fell in love with the little boy, PJ. I felt his longing to understand the mysteries of his life and his parents who came from very different backgrounds. Wanting to understand and possibly find the father who disappeared, sent Preston on a search to places unknown to him outwardly but where he was very connected inwardly. That which drove a wedge in the relationship between PJ/Preston and his mother at home, brought them together in the jungles inhabited by the Maya.

This is an amazing story of our search to know who we truly are and of sometimes seeking long enough to discover the answer.
