This soldering iron caught my eye because it was wireless and powered by butane. I love this idea. Even though I've been soldering for years, I never knew about butane irons. EVEN THOUGH they are sold right next to the electric irons!

Anyway, this iron is the finest quality iron I've had to date. Sure, the cheap ones can work very well if you take care of them and if you use clean, decent tips. This I can't stress enough. To all you out there who are beginners with soldering, the most important thing is to keep your tips clean and tinned or else it will become useless and you'll feel like you can't figure out why you suck at soldering! I've been there! Don't buy this expecting it to solve that problem. Learn to maintain an iron and you can do well with a cheap one. Buy this iron and it will add major convenience and performance.

The heat range of this iron is very good. At the lowest setting (supposedly 25W) you can easily melt solder and burn flux. You can also make a mess of your tip in no time flat.

At the hottest setting (supposedly 125W) you will see the entire tip glow red. No, I don't mean the inside of the tip where there is actual fire. I mean the whole of the metal tip will glow in the dark like a red hot poker. I can not believe how hot this thing gets!

The tips themselves seem to be very nice. I couldn't find any details on the metallurgy, coatings, or anything but from what I can tell, they don't appear to be copper (unless it is a coated copper), though they appear to be pre-tinned. They work very well right out of the box, making your soldering just like the pros, but they'll foul up quickly if you don't keep them clean and tinned.

To clean oxides off the tips I used steel wool or a 3M scouring pad.

If I understand correctly the Trademark Portasol is not used for distributing this product in US.
So you can find almost the same 'Weller' brand product but with a different. The Portasol have 3 or 4 more tips compare to Weller.

You might be confused because you will not be able to find the minimal power output for this product (now I know that it's 25-125 Watt).
You can try to look some detail information on a Portasol native site:
[...]but you find also that the color of a box is red in a specifications file...
Finally I find that the product I received in gray box is the same as in Specifications.

The Tool is really good.
Even the open flame is quite useful and you can keep it horizontally orientated...

This product is definitely the great one.
And additional tips is also useful features for this product.

I strongly recommended it... more than Weller brand one... because of the additional tip set Portasol have...

Refiling is quite easy... Using of this product is also easy and pleasant...

some technical detail:

Portasol SuperPro 125 ProPiezo 75

Length (with cap) 230mm 178mm
Weight ( no gas, with cap & tip) 126g 75g
Operation Time (depending on setting) 120 min 60 min
Max power output 125 Watt 75 Watt

Hot Air Tip 625C (1157F)

Piezo Ignitor 50000 cycles

PS I find that reference power output or Portasol SuperPro is 25-125 Watt
but I have a feeling that you can adjust the output from 0 to 125. because on a minimal settings the flame just fade away.

I already have a Weller digital soldering station (WESD51) which works great, but it's not really portable and there are times when the cord really gets in the way because it's not long enough or whatever. I mostly bought this for working on my race motorcycle in my garage and at the track after paying the track mechanic $60 to solder 5 wires (ouch!). I wouldn't recommend this for doing a lot of delicate work (SMD, etc), but if you're looking for high quality and portable then the Portasol might be the ticket.

The good:
- Easy to use. No problems adjusting temp, refilling with butane or changing tips
- Lights the first time, every time
- Wide range of attachments included (more the equivalent Weller)
- Heats up quickly and easy to control
- Storage case holds everything included and just enough room for a small tube of solder & braid
- Built in stand works great, rotates out of the way for use and no worries about loosing it.

The not so good:
- Sponge was a nice idea, but is a bit too small to be useful
- Manual isn't all that good. Luckily it's easy enough to use that it's not a big deal.
- Attachment for heat shrink tube works, but isn't easy to use. Better then nothing and will work in a pinch, but a real heat gun is much easier to use.
- Not obvious when it lights right away since it takes a 2-3 seconds for it to heat up enough to glow

One thing to keep in mind is that it doesn't include any butane so you'll need to buy that separately. According to the directions, you should use high quality butane rather then the really cheap stuff which makes sense to me. Honestly, quality butane isn't that expensive where it should be an issue, but if you're going to use this a lot, then an electric soldering iron will be a lot more cost effective.
