I got this as my Berzomatic solder/torch just was not doing a good job with regular soldering. Though this is smaller it appears to be hotter then the bernzomatic. I have used the torch option for soldering 4axg wire terminals and it was really good. I have used the #2 tip on the same wire and terminals and it was very fast and I had an easier time controlling where the solder went. I used the heat shrink tip and was not initially pleased with it but I realized you had to wait for the whole thing to heat up the tip and the reflector. Then you just pass it though slowly and it seems to work good that way. Have not tried it in the kitchen yet but I believe I will use the other torch I have for that. Oh I have noticed that the flame is smaller but it actually seems to burn hotter than my bernzomatic.
The only flaw I have found is with the iron rest. it is easy to tip over.
The case is very handy. I may modify it to hold more tips though. I already ordered to one of which did not come with it and the other is the one I plan to use the mose.

Being able to buy tips is important as if you have done much soldering you know that tips just seem to magically shrink with use. So that is a really good feature.
I will update this as time goes on.

6 months ago, I accidently dropped an Irwin industrial micro torch kit into the water. Not just the torch, but the entire kit. Watching from above while the torch went blub, I reminisced; lingering on all the times the torch would not fire while I, cramped up in a small inhospitable bilge, threw expletives at the work at hand. And then I smiled. Realization did dawn, I was free from this incapable tool. Ever since that blessing incident, a portasol micro torch now resides in my tool box. I'm a marine mechanic, and I only ask my tools to do one thing- work when I need you to. The Portasol does just that, and has been doing that, consistantly, for 6 months. It self ignites every time, heat control works well, and the butane resevoir is large so the job gets done. This torch will even work on a breezy day. So instead of using a lot of 'hot' swear words to heat shrink wiring. . . "click", that's the sweet sound of my Portasol blowing hot air.

i do a lot of home projects, especially with arduinos and i need to do a lot of soldering. this torch is amazing. the only issue i had with it in the beginning was that i was destroying my solder tips to the point that i could no longer keep them tinned and clean. instead they oxidized to the point that they were useless. it was my mistake, i had the temperature way too high. at the lowest setting i can solder PCB's perfectly. if i need to solder something larger like soldering several large gauge wires together, i actually don't use a tip, but just use the flame directly. i love the heat shrink attachment, as i use heat shrink a lot during my projects to keep them neat and clean.

if you want a great soldering iron without the need of an annoying cord, get this, you will not be disappointed.

This is the first review I have ever left and I have bought quite a few items on Amazon over the years. I really liked this product I used it to solder wires for a CD player and to shrink heat shrink tubing. Worked flawlessly and was very easy to fill up, ignited on the very first try, and heat up very quick. Case it comes in was nice too. There was one point that I used this to actually repair a wire in the dash and was just the right size to be work in a tight space and easy to control. I didn't get a chance to use the other tips, but I'm sure they work great. I would definitely buy this again no questions asked. Great tool and keep in mind I'm not experienced with soldering and was very easy for me.

This tool is great. All the tips except for the torch are flameless, but still get extremely hot. The torch works well, unless you turn down the fuel supply to much then the flame will go out. I tend to use the torch on a high heat setting anyway so it hasnt caused any problems for me. I havent used the hot knife, but I suspect that its angle is too blunt to cut well. All the soldering tips are great and heat up quickly. I would recommend this tool for a hobbiest like myself who would rather not wait for a small electric torch to heat up, and does some work requiring more heat and some small pipe soldering (such as on model steam engines).

This is a GREAT tool!

I've used a lot of soldering tools over the years, and i expected this to be a reasonable gadget (kind of like a Swiss Army Knife) for small soldering jobs where electric power wasn't easy to come by - OK in a pinch, but not a serious tool.
But was I surprised when i looked my new Portasol kit over!
First - the feel and balance are really good. It's as comfortable to hold as the best bench soldering irons - better, because there is no cord.
Second, The materials used to make it are top-notch. As an engineer, i can appreciate the difference between cheap, low cost plastic and premium stuff. This will hold up.
Third, The design is the result of a lot of thought by people who know their business. Tips are easy to change, and solidly attached, and are plated for durability. Fueling is clean and easy. The controls are simple and effective. I wouldn't change anything.

Using the tool was very satisfactory. The heat range is quite good for anything on a circuit board. I found that a mid-way setting was perfect for soldering thru-hole components, and a little lower temp worked on surface-mount parts. I used the high setting to solder some terminal lugs to #8 wire. The temperature holds steady once set, and heats up quickly.

The Open-Flame torch attachment worked quite well for about ten minutes, then the flame got short and wouldn't adjust much. I shut the torch off for a minute or so, restarted it, and all was good again for another ten minutes. I have no idea what this is about.

The Hot-Air attachment works fine for heat-shrink, but my 1200W electric hot-air tool is faster.

I've read a lot on-line about butane purity being crucial for long life in mini-torches.
