Adequate but not outstanding, February 5, 2010
This review is from: Porte Crayon: Life of David Hunter Strother (Hardcover)
This biography was originally published in 1960, which is the version I read. After 50 years tastes changes, needs change, expectations change. So I was a bit disappointed with the focus and intent of this book. The author tends to focus on the subject's character, ethics and morals and tends to ignore hard usable facts that might be of interest of anyone not concerned with the man's moral compass. We do learn the basics, where David Hunter Strother was born, that he attended school, he learned his art and that he visited Europe. We know that he traveled through Virginia and beyond but we aren't treated to exact addresses, explicit itineraries, or given specific routes of his wanderings. My displeasure probably has to do with being spoiled by the explosion of information in today's technical age as I tend to want details. We do learn about Porte Crayon's many literary friends and acquaintances but we don't learn much about his wife, his family and his children. In 1960 the context of a man's nuclear family most likely wasn't all that important. Of course, the author treats us to 2 long chapters of troop movements during the Civil War, I wouldn't have expected anything less. Any book about anyone during this time frame that is written by white man will do this as sure as the sun will rise tomorrow. All in all, the biography gives us a highly biased view of the writer and illustrator and reads much like a thesis. This tome might be due for some updating, which could offer some additional information.
