5.0 out of 5 stars porter cable- the best
I have had this saw for about two years. I have never once had a problem with it. It has the highest amp rating (15). Every piece on it is built rugged. I mostly use the saw for framing and roughing in houses. It will rip through hardwoods with ease as well cut metal, plywood, and cement without bogging down (using the correct blade). I have tried other saws such as...

I mostly use the saw for framing and roughing in houses. It will rip through hardwoods with ease as well cut metal, plywood, and cement without bogging down (using the correct blade). I have tried other saws such as DeWalt and Makita, there is no comparison. this is definitely a heavy duty saw. I usally go through one saw a year, this is the only one that has not let me down. It has been through every material out there. its the best

4.0 out of 5 stars The ultimate in power and quality, April 28, 2000
This review is from: Porter-Cable 347K 7-1/4-Inch Blade-Right Circular Saw Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
This is a truly top quality machine rivaling any Bosch or Milwaukee I have used. I feel confident claiming that 1000 monkeys with 1000 hammers could not distort the honeycomb cast magnesium base on this saw - it is amazingly strong. The base has very subtle grooves on the bottom to displace any sawdust like an all weather tire and is finished in what seems to be some sort of super slippery powder coat. In other words, it glides across wood like no other saw imaginable. Many saws in this class use a cheap stamped plate aluminum base that while smooth and clean, look as though a corner could be bent just by setting the saw down wrong and also may tend to catch on sawdust and/or scratch the work with debris. The plastic housing, switch, and blade adjustment mechanisms are also top quality. There is not much to say about the power, it is all there - all of it. Even in the rare event that I do need an extension cord, the long power cord eliminates the tendency for the plug to catch on the edge of my work 6 feet into the job. The total package gets four stars because it is lacking some important details: The shaft lock is difficult to use. It involves pushing and holding a small pin while turning the blade (like a Dremel) whereas I would much prefer a slide that first disengages the power switch and then locks the blade later when the blade is turned (like a car steering wheel lock). This type of shaft lock system is widely used amongst routers and other tools and is extremely effective. The blade depth adjustment is easily tightned but very difficult to loosen and since the blade must be set to maximum depth to fit in the case, I make this adjustment with almost every use. While not particularly loud, it appears that no attempt has been made to quiet the distinctive "circular saw" sound. Keeping in Porter Cable tradition, the case is far too large yet does not provide blade storage or power cord management (the wonderful long power cord is tough to put away), the dust bag and rip fence should be included in a saw of this price (and a place made for them in the case). Certainly most of my complaints apply equally to every other saw in the world but nonetheless that is no basis for a five star rating. Lastly, as a right hander, I prefer the left blade model 743 but your milage of course may vary.

The saw is light weight, powerful, and has a great base, but it has many drawbacks. The dust chute manages to blow sawdust in your face and down your back no mater which way it is pointed. Put the bag on it (should be included but isn't) and it usually clogs down at the narrowed throat of the saw (the narrow portion is a real chokepoint, I don't know why they designed it like that -- have been tempted to drill it out). The case seems to be very large on the outside but doesn't hold the edge guide (should be included but isn't) inside. The shaft lock button is small, hard to get at, and hurts your finger to press and hold to change blades. The lever that controls raising and lowering the blade is hard to loosen in the blade down position. I just bought a new Milwaukee saw and am going to sell off the Porter Cable. It's OK but has too many aggravations!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Pleased with my first Porter Cable Purchase, April 19, 2003

This was my first "must have" tool purchased when building my detached garage. After suffering with my dad's lesser quality Skil and Sears saws, I was really amazed at the heft and power this has. One note - I could find very little difference in this and the Makita of the same price. Went with the PC only because of the Made in USA label. VERY satisfied - and after cutting through 18 2x12's that had to have a 15 degree bevel, I am now "hooked" on Porter Cable products - also bought the FR350 nailer, the 693 router, and the FN250A finish nailer - all five stars!

I have had this saw for several years and have used it for everything from plywood and framing to pavers! Outstanding power..used it to cut 18" long 2" thick pavers all day long. I didn't realize how smooth and light this saw is until I used my friends new Milwaukee saw. The case is too large but holds everything, however you do have to readjust the saw in order to close the case each time. Great saw!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Saw...case needs some work, April 8, 2002
This review is from: Porter-Cable 347K 7-1/4-Inch Blade-Right Circular Saw Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
The saw itself is great. It's powerful, accurate, and a joy to use. Changing blades is easy and the bevel and height adjustment controls are straightforward. Also, the dust chute is a nice feature, and the saw has a space where you can run the cord through on the side to keep it out of the way.

Two minor gripes:
1) The case, thought adequate in size for the saw itself, leaves little room for any accessories.
2) Speaking of accessories, it would have been nice if the dust bag was included with the saw. If you buy the saw, get the dustbag. Mine works quite well.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this saw., December 15, 2000

This review is from: Porter-Cable 347K 7-1/4-Inch Blade-Right Circular Saw Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
I recently purchased this saw to replace an old Craftsmen Circular saw. I didn't know quick and accurate cuts where possible to make simultaneously. This saw has more than enough power for framing work. It is also very light, which cuts down on the fatigue factor, and the extra long cord means you can rip through a sheet of plywood and not get your plug snagged on the edge. Buy one for yourself, you'll love it too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Light, but powerful, December 6, 2000
This review is from: Porter-Cable 347K 7-1/4-Inch Blade-Right Circular Saw Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
This is the only item on the Christmas list I gave to my wife this year. This saw packs a wallop. There is no excess weight, which makes it a pleasure to use for extended periods. The line of vision is good, and the 15 amp motor will not bog down under most circumstances. The sawdust chute can clog, but it's a lot better than some saws I've used. A very good, professional quality saw.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best 7 1/4 Saw Out There. Period!!, December 2, 2001

I have had this saw for a few years now and have done many jobs with it. Although, the day I got it I cut the cord with-in 30 seconds! He-He! I have used the Skil 77 saw which is also very nice, for cutting cement siding, it performs well but not like my Porter-Cable. If you are a contractor, the light weight and power is awsome! I love the table plate. These guy's definately took their time in designing this saw. I would HIGHLY reccomend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great product, August 31, 2003

This is a well made, quiet, and powerful tool. I did not see any problem with saw dust exhaust. In addition, the standard dust bag from my Porter cable belt sander (another great tool) snaps right in. I like the extra long cord and adjustments are easy. Manual is acceptable. This tool replaces a Black and Decker saw which I do not miss any more. Very pleased.
