5.0 out of 5 stars top notch power tool
I'm a finish carpenter and bought this tool to replace my twelve year old 15" Hitachi miter box. It is a fine solidly built tool and was ready to go from the box. Both the bevel and miter gauges are well laid out. The bevel is a very industrial-looking metal plate with a well-protected indicator pin. The miter gauge degrees are offset from the handle, but not so...

3.0 out of 5 stars A good saw but there are better
Let me start by saying I have a Hitachi c8fb2, but I needed a 10" saw for my other crew who needs to cut 4X4's regularly. I was on the job the other day and used this saw and was not very impressed. It is a good saw has an electronic break which is a nice feature, but the motor just did not seem to run as smooth as the Hitachi.

Let me also state that I ordered...

5.0 out of 5 stars top notch power tool, February 2, 2002

This review is from: Porter-Cable 3807 10-Inch Sliding Compound Miter saw (Tools & Home Improvement)
The miter gauge degrees are offset from the handle, but not so dramatically as the Makita and easier to read than the Makita. All the adjusting levers and locks are easily reached and adjusted. The slide is solid and smooth; the chop is a bit stiff but can be adjusted. The fence is predrilled for auxillary fences, which I add often for repetitive cuts like face frames or porch balusters.
Carrying this saw is easy, too: set the bevel and miter to 45 and the saw seems to fold to a managble size--important for carrying up stairs or through finished spaces.
I have two complaints. Looking through the plastic blade guard to sight your cut is impossible; the plastic distorts the view. Try looking through the bottom of a soda bottle. It appears Porter Cable meant for a notch at the base of the guard to be a solution. It isn't. They need to replace this with a Dewalt-like guard.
After three days of steady use the dust bag was virtually empty but the floor was plenty dusty.
The RPMs are fairly slow so I dumped the standard 40 tooth blade in favor of a 60 tooth. There is a lot less chipping on sliding cuts.

5.0 out of 5 stars PORTER CABLE 10" Sliding Compound Miter Saw, May 4, 2001

nicname: Flip, I found this saw to be of exceptional quality.I had alot of good saws to choose from and it was a toss up between this and the Bosch. The Dewalt is a great saw also but the blades are much to expensive if you plan on doing alot of cutting. The blade that comes on the saw is fine for semi finish work but you'll want to invest in a better blade preferably 80teeth and above for fine finish work. The only thing I found wrong was that the extra blade that was sent is for a table saw not a sliding compound miter(different hook on the teeth of the blade). I think whom ever purchases this saw won't regret it.Happy saw dust. :) feel free to drop a line or two

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Saw on the Planet, October 8, 2001

I've used a lot of saws and power tools in my day, and after looking at DeWalt, Sears, Bosche, and others, I found the Porter Cable 10" Slider to be the most amazingly accurate and comfortable to use Miter Saw. Don't bother buying any saw unless it slides. This Saw is not light. Degree markers are ON THE MONEY, right out of the box and easily readable. Just use a square to confirm the factory set-up. The rails slide like a hot knife thru butter, and the pull force is just perfect. Try a Freud 80 tooth "Red Blade" for Mill work and you can throw away your sandpaper. This saw ROCKS!!

Cuts are accuate and clean. I have it hooked up to an auto Fien vac and they make an excellent combination. Looking for a sliding compound miter saw - this is the one. This saw in an investment in quality and should last longer than a lifetime. Porter Cable out did itself on this one - I hope Delta will not interfear with Porter Cable innovation and excellence.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great saw!, October 9, 2001

The Porter Cable 3807 saw is very well made with near perfect fit and finish. All details of the saw are surprisingly well thought out with great attention to detail. I particularly like the base design, which was cleverly made to allow easy mounting on a 2x4 extension frame.

I had a problem with the first saw I ordered. When cutting oak, or other very hard wood, the saw would occasionally and unpredictably throw the left half of the piece that I was cutting upward with great force. The first time this happened I was cutting short 2x2 blocks of oak. Near the end of the cutting stroke the left portion of the block flew upward into the palm of my hand. I thought it was just a fluke or that I had made a mistake of some kind. I put on heavy leather gloves and continued to work so I could finish my project. After a few cuts it happened again. I have had no problems cutting fir or pine.

I sent a letter to Porter Cable telling them about this problem. I soon received a phone call from them. Porter Cable has replaced the entire saw at no cost. This speaks very highly of Porter Cable.

I have had no problems at all with the second saw. It cuts PERFECT miters and I am very impressed. The only reason for the four star rating, rather than five stars, is that I had to send the first saw back. I would buy this saw again, in fact, I did!

5.0 out of 5 stars Superior Product, October 4, 2002

I have put in a fair bit of time with miter saws, and this one is the very best I have yet encountered. The stock 40-tooth carbide blade is OK, but equip this saw with a Forrest Chopmaster and you will possess a true precision instrument. Accuracy and repeatability leave nothing to be desired.

One design feature is brilliant here: the entire table turns for miter settings. Nearly all similar saws employ a central turntable with fixed shoulders on either side. That can eventually lead to alignment problems: as castings warp and pivot points wear, the turntable can end up a bit higher or lower than the shoulders. I've seen this more than once (most recently on an almost-new Hitachi--OUCH), and with such a problem you can forget about cutting accuracy. That simply won't happen on this model.

Though the saw is admittedly heavier than many competing models, the weight turns out to be an asset, as it brings welcome stability. The stock clamp is quickly set, convenient enough that I tend to use it for nearly every cut---and with both hands off the table, there's little chance of injury. Nice touch: base casting notched to fit over sawhorse 2x4s. Only one missing feature is notable here: no interlock for the power switch. Grab the handle and the saw is running.

I love this saw, it is about 100 cheaper than the others in its class and it is smooth and accurate, it slides nice all the time with minimal adjustment, and always is accurate even right out of the box, id say buy this if you want to save a hundered and get a good blade that will make this saw twice as nice.

As a trim carpenter I have had the pleasure of using many different saws. This saw is excellent. I did change to a Freud cutoff blade since the type of trim work I do does require fine cuts. It has all the power needed to cut through some of the hardest woods and not bog down. I mounted this saw on a Stable Mate stand with extensions and it fits well. The saw is a little heavy to carry but I am willing to live with it. My congratulations to Porter Cable for a saw well done.

Been using this one for about a year now and it is right on the money. You set it a 45deg. and it's right there without any slop.I have been making both picture frames & doors frames and have not had one stitch of trouble. One thing in the negative, the dust bag is worthless. 90% of the sawdust hits the deck and not the bag. Not a problem big enough that would give a 4 star instead of 5. From what I read it seems to be a problem with most power miter saws.

I have had this saw 60 days. It has replaced a normal miter. This must be the best compound miter saw on the market. Others are using it all the time. Makes great picture frames the fist time every time. Excellent fit and finish. Cleans up well. Was set right by the factory. Added a Forrest Blade and it only got better. This is the one to buy!
