Although Porter-Cable's 7-1/4-inch circular saw features a 15 amp motor, it weighs just 10-1/2 pounds. It's an excellent choice for builders who want a saw that packs plenty of power without the heft of a wormdrive. To lighten the saw, Porter-Cable used lightweight, durable magnesium--which won't crack or bend--for the blade guards and part of the housing. It's still a tough saw, though; in fact, Porter-Cable boasts that this saw will sustain up to a 6-foot drop without damage. This saw sports a very flat, very strong cast-magnesium table, too, with reinforced ribs that make it difficult to bend or break. (Can someone tell us why some companies ruin good saws by giving them wimpy tables?)

Porter-Cable took care of the details, too. The no-catch lip on the blade guard ensures that the guard won't catch on an edge at the beginning of a cut, and it keeps a user's hands away from the retraction lever. This model comes with a two-second electric brake, a feature for which you pay extra, but that reduces the chance of accidents and can minimize the wait between cuts. The 360-degree adjustable top dust nozzle lets you direct sawdust in any direction, and you can easily attach a dust bag or a shop vac to collect the dust--a particularly handy feature for a remodeler who wants to make a couple of cuts indoors without making a mess. There's also a clip on the top of the saw that lets you clamp the cord off to the side when you're cutting sheet material, so it's less likely to drag behind and snag the edge. A heavy-duty carrying case comes included, too, though it's a little tricky getting the saw to fit inside. --Jon Groebner

When my 20 year old Sears saw died I decided to replace it with a first-rate saw. I wanted one that had a brake (for safety), a solid baseplate that could be accurately slid along a cutting guide, and that didn't weigh a ton. This saw met all my expectations. It's as powerful as any sidewinder on the market and weighs less than any other saw I know of.

The P/C has plenty of power, and runs very smoothly. The dust chute is a welcomed feature. From the heavy duty cord to the carbide tipped blade it's well worth the additional investment over the low end craftsman stuff. If the industry is listening, all circular saws need to add a blade guard lock-up and a blade hight index.

I replaced an old B&D saw with this PC447. What a difference. This saw is trhe lgihtest most powerful 7.25" saw you can buy. It's built very well, and the fit/finish is excellent. The elctronic brake is worth it's weight in gold. It's so nice to have the blade stop in a second or two rather than waiting for the blade 10+ seconds to come to a stop like most other breakless saws. The dust port is exceptional. I purchased this saw beacuse I had quite a bit of pressure treated lumber to cut and wanted to make sure I collected all the dust without blowing it all over the lawn. Hooked up to my shopvac, I am able to collect almost all the dust produced. This saw is one of the best rated saws you can get and the break and dust port made it a "must have" for me.
