4.0 out of 5 stars Porter out does the competition
Great little grinder.I also have a Dewalt 4 1/2 grinder. I like the porter over the Dewalt because of the extra power it has. The only thing I don't like is the paddle switch lock, it is a little hard to unlock. ( it may just take a little time to get used to )

3.0 out of 5 stars Never Slows Down
This is a great small angle grinder. It has plenty of power and the three position handle is an advantage in certain situations over two position models. The only reason I give it 3 stars instead of 5 is the safety switch. It is a pain to operate out of the box. I had to file it down to use it, now it works fine. Milwaukee has a similar switch on their small angle...

It has a nice compact size with lots of torque. The safety switch is awkward only if you're used to another type. It is secure, no worry about picking it up running by mistke. Well balanced and smooth running. Use it on job, hasn't needed any work or parts in 2 years

I have 7 Porter C power tools and use all most everyday. They get full of abrasive fiberglass dust and none have needed any maintenance. There are other good co's like dewalt but the combination of esthetic and functional design, nice styling classic grey and black, plenty of power and reliability while priced similar to others.

The only reason I give it 3 stars instead of 5 is the safety switch. It is a pain to operate out of the box. I had to file it down to use it, now it works fine. Milwaukee has a similar switch on their small angle grinders that is just as effective and works much smoother. I would not buy this grinder again because off the switch. A safety switch should be an aid to the user, not a hindrance.

2.0 out of 5 stars My first PC disappointment, August 22, 2001

I own 12 different PC power tools, some of them now over 20 years old and still going strong. However, after less than 2 years of infrequent, light duty homeowner use, the motor of this tool developed a high-pitched screeching noise and rpm's would rapidly fluctuate. I returned it to the PC factory service center in Carrollton, TX for repair. TWO MONTHS LATER, I received an unexpected ...COD notice from UPS! ... I refused the COD, and phoned the service center for an explanation. I was told the motor had to be completely rebuilt, and this total (plus shipping, sales tax, and COD fees) was the standard repair charge. Again, I refused the charge, and was prepared to let them keep the tool. A couple weeks later the repair center manager phoned me, and he and I settled on a repair charge that I considered reasonable. I finally have my grinder back, but it better redeem itself, or next time the garbage man will find himself a present. There won't be another return trip to Texas!

Bought this grinder and never knew how many uses I would find for it. I beat it up and it keeps going! Well worth the $ - good value.

4.0 out of 5 stars Durable, April 3, 2003
This review is from: Porter-Cable 7406 4-1/2-Inch Small Angle Grinder (Tools & Home Improvement)
As others have mentioned, the switch lock is not the best design, particularly when using heavy gloves, so it lost a star.
After several years of ownership, I felt the need to comment on the durability of this product.
I have absolutely beaten on this tool, and it continues to function perfectly.
I has been dropped, soaked, buried in the dirt, stalled out repeatedly, overloaded, and exposed to every kind of abrasive dust there is. Honestly, it no longer owes me anything at this point, but it just keeps going and going...
I would buy one again, but I may never need to.
