4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad for a Porter Cable
I am a remodeling contractor and use all types of saws. I bought the combo pack when they first came out with the 19.2 volt cordless tools. The saw was great. It had the feel of a corded saw, compared to the Dewalt 18 volt that has a ackward top handle. The saw has plenty of power to cut 2x lumber (the amount of cuts varies) and plywood. Some light demolishing was no...

I purchased this saw about a month ago after much hand-wringing whether to get the Dewalt l8v cordless or the Porter Cable l9.2v. I finally opted for the Porter Cable l9.2, figuring it would have more power. The manufacturer touts that this saw will cut up to l25 2X4's on a single charge. NO WAY! 30 tops. NO WAY! 30 tops. I returned the saw after 2 weeks and exchanged it for the l8v Dewalt of the same blade size. The batteries in the Dewalt dont last any longer in the Dewalt and the Dewalt isnt as powerful. So I guess I should have stuck with the Porter Cable.

Some light demolishing was no problem either. I also have Dewalt 6" and 5-1/4" 18 volt saws, neither can compete with the 19.2 volt Porter-Cable. The ownly problem was the longevity of the batteries, I,ve replaced both batteries twice already. The 18 volt Dewalt batteries are still running. I own all Dewalt tools and will continue to buy Dewalt but this saw won me over. I would recommend this saw over the Dewalt 24 and 18 volt saws for the professional contractors and the do-it-yourselfers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Meets all expectations, July 5, 2000

we purchased this item to use on construction sites when either electricity or generators were unavailable. Most of the time that usage was when we sent punch out workers to customers homes. The unit was light enough to carry easily, yet tough enough to cut through wood and cement siding materials. The battery supplied plenty of power and more than lasted all day.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good job saw, March 1, 2002
This review is from: Porter-Cable 9845 Saw Boss 19.2-Volt Ni-Cad 6-Inch Cordless Circular Saw (Tools & Home Improvement)
Took a little fine tuning, but after that, I've been happy with it. Couldn't square it up until I filed down the little housing plate stop. And batteries had awfully short charge life until I had used them a while after which they seemed to do a lot better. Probably had been sitting in a warehouse for a while and needed to be conditioned with use. Had to set the cutting lineup guides, which were pretty worthless untill I learned how to set them for how I use the saw. Now they work fine.

Overall, once I got the kinks out, I'm very happy. Typical Porter Cable excellent quality and well designed.

I'd have given it five stars if it had come out of the box in a more ready to use condition. But, since I had to remanufacture it to make it satisfactory . . . only 4 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars this carpenter says almost there, November 9, 2001

I have had this saw for several months now. I work with guys who own the dewalt and the makita. The dewalt has an awful, awkward feel, almost like a pretend tool. The makita is better to handle but has a very short battery life. This PC feels like a real tool and produces as one. While one reviewer claims to have done a whole gable my batteries are not there, hence the 4 out of 5 stars. I also use the PC 6"saw boss corded saw so the blades do double duty. Years ago I had the Milwaukee cordless saw and returned it as the battery life was just to short. This PC is generations better in every way and I do not regret for a moment its purchase, but wish it had a longer run life.

I have owned this saw for over a year and use it every day. It is probably one of the best investments I have made. It is especially handy for work on a ladder. It is great for small jobs as you don't have to run a cord. In and out means more money and a shorter day. I purchased it in kit form with the driver and flashlight, they also perform well. The blade guard has a special lip that actually swings the guard up on angle cuts. It ha splenty of power. My batteries are still good after a year+. I sided three gable ends on a home and almost made it on one battery. I have ripped sheet goods and dimensional lumber with it. I opted for the 6" blade because it will do 45 cuts through 2X material. There have been no problems with it. You get what you pay for. The rest of my Porter-Cable tools are no different.

3.0 out of 5 stars batteries?, March 12, 2006
This review is from: Porter-Cable 9845 Saw Boss 19.2-Volt Ni-Cad 6-Inch Cordless Circular Saw (Tools & Home Improvement)
I have used the combo kit for about 4 years. The drill has a lot of torque but the chuck gave up it's grip after 3 years of occasional use. I replaced it with the new all metal chuck from pc not available on all of their drills. pc told me it grips better and will last longer. So far I am happy with it after a year. Now to the saw: It cuts okay when the battery is fresh but if anything is binding on the blade such as when the work is not properly supported you will use up the battery in a hurry.Torque drops off quickly as other reviewers have pointed out. This probaly explains why some people can not get more than 30 cut 2x4s on a charge. If everything is set up right you can get over 100 2x4 cuts. Also for some reason plywood eats up the batteries faster than cutting 2x4s. Except for the occasional cut I have not been using it much for these reasons. You would have to have a big pouch full of batteries to get any serious work done with this saw. The batteries and charger have given me fits. I am on my 3rd charger in 4 years and the first two just outlived the one year warranty. PC had nothing interesting to say about it. I have also gone through 3 batteries. Beware that there are various capacity replacements out there and make sure you get the largest available. After using Makita batteries, Bosch batteries, and older Portercable 12 volt batteries I would say I got the shortest life out of the 19.2 volt pc batteries. Now that Lithium Ion technology has arrived I would get a different brand such as Makita , Milwaukee , or the yet to be released Dewalt. You will get much longer run times with this new technology. KS Maryland

PURCHASED THE QUAD PACK BUT HAD SOME SPECULATION ABOUT THE SAW DUE TO PROBLEMS FROM THE PAST WITH OTHER BRANDS. AFTER ABOUT A DAYS USE I AM COMPLETELY SOLD ON THIS SAW. HAS ALL THE POWER YOU NEED TO DO WORK THAT IS MADE FOR CORDLESS TOOLS. THIS SAW , IN MY OPINION , IS HANDS DOWN THE BEST I HAVE USED. IT FEELS SO COMFORTABLE WHILE USING I PURCHASED TWO SPARE BATTERIES SO I WONT HAVE TO BOTHER WITH A CORDED SAW. YOU CANT BELIEVE HOW MUCH TIME THIS SAVES YOU IN A PRODUCTION TYPE ENVIRONMENT AND HOW MUCH NEATER THE SHOP LOOKS WITHOUT CORDS EVERYWHERE.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best tool ever, November 13, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Porter-Cable 9845 Saw Boss 19.2-Volt Ni-Cad 6-Inch Cordless Circular Saw (Tools & Home Improvement)
I bought one of the combo kits together with the drill.

I find this is the best tool I have ever bought and Porter Cable has certainly made a winner of this product.

I did have a De Walt tool before but this is far better- I am now converted to Porter Cable product.

This is a very nice tool. Light, compact, cuts well and good battery life. I hope they will come out with a Lithium-Ion battery that will fit it. I also hope they will make a Lithium-Ion that will interchange with all their 19.2 volt tools.
