4.0 out of 5 stars The best 14.4V cordless drill?
I don't really think that you can call any one of the 14.4V drills the best. They all have their strenghts and the best one depends on the use that you put it to. Having said that, it makes me crazy to see Amazon/Tool Crib recommend the 3/8" chucked version as the best choice. Why would anyone choose it over the 1/2" chuck when the price is the same or very...

2.0 out of 5 stars Returning a Flawed Product
I've had my PC about 3 days now and putting it to good use on a kitchen and flooring remodel job. I've had 2 problems; one minor and one major.

The minor problem is that the trigger has side-side play in it which effects the forward/reverse switch. There's enough play so that you can't use your thumb and forefinger to switch directions without changing your hand...

I don't really think that you can call any one of the 14.4V drills the best. They all have their strenghts and the best one depends on the use that you put it to. Having said that, it makes me crazy to see Amazon/Tool Crib recommend the 3/8" chucked version as the best choice. Why would anyone choose it over the 1/2" chuck when the price is the same or very close? Having the ability to use a 1/2" bit now and again is a huge advantage and calling the 3/8" version the best drill in its class is a huge mistake in my book.

Just my two cents. Hopefully it changes someone's mind and makes the editor's rethink their selection.

5.0 out of 5 stars A DRILL OF DISTINCT QUALITY, December 11, 1999
This review is from: Porter-Cable 9876 14.4 Volt 3/8-Inch Cordless Drill Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
THIS DRILL IS AN EXCELLENT DRILL WITH EVERYTHING YOU WILL EVER NEED WITH ITS ELECT. BRAKE, 1 HOUR CHARGER, 360 IN/LBS OF TORQUE AND EXCELLENT BALANCE AND FEEL. AFTER DOING EXTENSIVE RESEARCH ON DIFFERENT MAKES AND MODELS OF CORDLESS DRILLS THIS WAS THE BEST DRILL ON THE MARKET IN MY OPINION. TRY IT YOU WILL NOT BE DISSAPOINTED.

5.0 out of 5 stars Our Porter Cable drill motor has a hard, HARD life..., June 1, 2000
This review is from: Porter-Cable 9876 14.4 Volt 3/8-Inch Cordless Drill Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
This drill motor is used in our appliance repair business and we also use it on the weekends as we rehab our 100 year old house. (We give the drill motor Sunday's off, but that's about it)

It is the most powerful drill motor I've ever used. It is *superior* for driving screws (there are currently about 476,898 screws holding our old house together) and the battery lasts forever. When I say "driving screws" I mean DRIVING SCREWS.

In our bathroom rehab, we used this PC Drill motor to drive several 4" x 1/4" lag bolts into tight old lumber and it did amazingly well.

If you set the clutch at its highest setting, you can ring the heads right off screws. (if your hands are strong enough) It is *that* powerful a screw gun.

This drill has been dropped, kicked, abused and it keeps on going. You can either buy a truck full of cheap-junk, frustrate-the-mess-out-of-you-low-rent drill motors, or you can buy ONE Porter Cable.

We've been so impressed with this product we've started buying Porter Cable's other products as well.

This gun has a good feel, good grip, LOTS OF POWER, (.wav file of grunting noise should go here) and the batteries last forever.

I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! I would've never dreamed it. . ., March 3, 2000

Last spring I lost a 12V Dewalt cordless with a box full of bits and other accessories. I replaced it with another.

This past fall I purchased a Craftsman 18V and it was a dream! Yesterday morning, somewhat thought that they needed it more than I. Its box had bits and accessories in it too.

Hard luck, eh?

Porter-Cable to the rescue! I was building a deck and needed to finish screwing down the deck boards. My 12V Dewalt wouldn't hack it. I went shopping and decided on the Porter-Cable 14.4V.

Toolk it back to jobsite, opened the box, put a bit in the chuck and started screwing. I hadn't even plugged the charger in yet. I probably drove 20 screws before what little charge was in it was drained. I put that battery in the charger and did somethig else for about 20 minutes. I took the battery out of the charger and drove at least 30 screws before it was drained. By then the 2nd battery had about 30 minutes charge on it and I finished driving the rest of the screws.

I would've never dreamed that this drill was what I've needed all along. It's medium weight for a cordless, has plenty of torque, charges quickly, and best of all. . .it's another Porter-Cable in my tool box!

The minor problem is that the trigger has side-side play in it which effects the forward/reverse switch. There's enough play so that you can't use your thumb and forefinger to switch directions without changing your hand position.

The major problem is the keyless chuck is trash. Drill bits, hex adapters, square drive and phillips bits literally fall out of the chuck when you place the tool pointing down!

I'll be returning it and already placed an order for a new Bosch, my 2nd one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still Impressed!, August 26, 2000
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Porter-Cable 9876 14.4 Volt 3/8-Inch Cordless Drill Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
I tried the 14.4V Ryobi "Pro" drill and the batteries would die after about 30 3" screws - took it back and got the PC. The PC drives more than twice as many screws. I agree with the other reviewers regarding the battery life, power, and ruggedness of this drill. I've had many cordless drills, but this one keeps impressing me everytime I use it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Unfortunate Experience, June 5, 2000
This review is from: Porter-Cable 9876 14.4 Volt 3/8-Inch Cordless Drill Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
I finally bit the bullet and upgraded my old 9.6 volt Makita drill to the Porter-Cable, thinking I had bought my last drill. I got three boards into my decking project and the clutch gear totally stripped out. I'm returning it today, and will likely swap it for a new one - hoping that I got the one lemon. I don't know what else to try as I've heard horror stories of premature failure with all the top brands. :-(

This is my 2nd pc drill, i own the 1/2 chuck model and the 3/8. These drills have been used daily for months with no problem, i am amazed that when i got a 18 inch long 3/8 drill bit stuck in 6x6 pressure treated lumber with my craftsmen corded 4 amp drill, that i was useing to make some flower beads, the pc came to my rescue, you may under estimate the power of this cordless, in low turned it (as well as my wrist)right down and out.I probally did 25 of these holes 18 inches deep before i changed the battery, which is alot. Its lasted me 4 months now and i finally stoped useing a corded drill when this cordless has more power.

I work in construction and when one of my co-workers has trouble with their drill they come find me and ask to borrow my "ol' reliable". This drill can get any job done, from drilling through multiple layers of wood to installing door locks.

Exellent drill. Bought to replace a stolen 18V dewalt. The shape of the grip fits me better than the Dewalt. BTW, Lowes sells the drill for 129.99. The slide on batteries allow you to attach chargers to the wall freeing up space.
