5.0 out of 5 stars Porter Cable PC650HD "Hammer" Drill
I purchased this drill for a weekend project requiring a hammer drill. Initially I liked the price tag and the Porter Cable name. Now, However, it is my favorite tool in my tool box. It is sturdy built of metal with minimal plastic and rubber in all areas you would hold it from. The 51,000 BPM turns any concrete into dust in seconds. The 6.5 AMP motor has enough power to...

3.0 out of 5 stars Could be better.
I used this to drill a few holes to anchor a fence to a wall. The fore grip immediately came loose and created a very dangerous situation. No matter how tight I made it it would still come loose. I finally took it off altogether. The switch for the speed control is awkward to use, flimsy and seems like it wont last long. Outside of these two issues it seems OK for the...

5.0 out of 5 stars Porter Cable PC650HD "Hammer" Drill, April 25, 2010
This review is from: Porter-Cable PC650HD 6.5 Amp 1/2-Inch Hammer Drill (Tools & Home Improvement)
The 6.5 AMP motor has enough power to spin any screw or drill through just about any material with tons of torque to spare. I even made it through A 1/8"th Steel plate with this thing This drill is by far worth every penny you will spend on it.

5.0 out of 5 stars LIKE A HOT KNIFE THROUGH BUTTER, February 21, 2011

This review is from: Porter-Cable PC650HD 6.5 Amp 1/2-Inch Hammer Drill (Tools & Home Improvement)
I had a couple of projects in mounting items on concrete walls. Thought I was smart by getting a good masonry bit for my all purpose Black and Decker drill. ( a good little drill that has served me well). Well, using that drill, it took 3 to 4 minutes to drill a 3 inch deep 3/16th hole in concrete. ( and a lot of push!)

I decided to get this Hammer Drill by Porter Cable and a 6 pack of hammer drill bits by Bosch. Would you believe just 15-20 seconds per hole and very little push effort? And the Tapcons seated perfectly. I had to drill 60 or so holes so this setup saved me a a few hours of sweat and effort.

Handles well and drills well both in hammer and regular mode. An excellent tool! Only drawback is the instruction booklet is very skimpy and not very helpful. A few more knobs, switches and buttons that a standard drill, so play with it a bit before use.

Highly recommended as well built of quality material, heavy duty construction, well balanced, and easy to use.

Amazon price is terrifically low, a bargain for the quality item you are getting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Proper!, November 23, 2009

I finally gave up on using a non-masonry drill on a very small project this weekend (second project requiring one in two weeks) and ran out to the local Big Box stores to get a hammer drill. You just can't beat a hammer drill for getting into cement; I had to sink some anchors for screws.

I almost walked out with a nice-enough looking 5amp Hitachi which was "reduced" to $60. While finding it on the rack, I noticed this product next to it for $10 more (but not on display). I'd used Porter Cable tools before in the past and quickly went for the 6.5 amps and the slight upsell . . .

1) It's what you expect from Porter Cable
It's light, but not flimsy, and the plastic parts have decent seams into the metal; nothing that you'd stress seems to be made out of plastic.

2) Balance and size are good.
Being low-end/power for this type of product, it's easy to make these small. Full sized handles and long body make the product stable and easy to use.

3) On a light project, the drilling was effortless
Whether a factor of the size or power rating - I had zero trouble with the 8 holes I had to get lined up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice Drill, June 27, 2010
This review is from: Porter-Cable PC650HD 6.5 Amp 1/2-Inch Hammer Drill (Tools & Home Improvement)
Got it at Lowes from Dad for $70. Used it immediately with a quarter in. Bosch masonry bit on a cinder block wall and it took every bit of a few seconds to get right into the block void. Real nice drill, two speeds and it has a three year warr. on it. Duane.

5.0 out of 5 stars so much POWER!, February 19, 2011
This review is from: Porter-Cable PC650HD 6.5 Amp 1/2-Inch Hammer Drill (Tools & Home Improvement)
bought this in order to drive some holes into the foundation to hang some shelves. My half-assed cordless just wasn't cutting it. Wen't to the store expecting to pay $200 for anything half-decent and returning it after the (small) job; I'm used to large expensive equipment. Walked into the hammer drill section and saw this beauty. Stood out amoung the rest as for one, the most beautiful (-industrial design student) as well as the most powerful they had and only $75. I already new I was gonna keep it <3 Bought it with a $4 1/4" hammer-bit and headed home. It drove through concrete like a warm pencil through butter. Easily the most powerful "pistol" shaped tool i've used. The housing feels sturdy enough to drive 30d nail. Stop reading, get it.

I am using this drill for 3/8 rebar into concrete. Works great after about a dozen holes. Never got very hot. It also spins fast enough for the Leigh Jig and makes clean holes.

I can recommend this drill for home use.

I needed a 1/2" drill that I could use for many types of projects. I am generally a Dewalt guy and have used Porter-Cable saws at some construction site so I thought maybe a drill would be the same quality. Dewalts are generally 10% - 20% higher in costs. My initial goal was to use it with a mixing paddle for mixing a light weight cement in a 5 gallon bucket. It worked extremely well without bogging down. The mixing paddle welds actually broke from the stiff mixing action. A two speed drill motor with a hammer drill. Price was right.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hammer Drill, April 7, 2011

Nice, powerful drill that does the job. I am not happy with the lack of a hard case, though. I expect, especially from PC, a plastic or metal case for their tools. I'm supposing that the lower price brings cardbard, not plastic or metal. I'll be looking around the yard sales for a case.

5.0 out of 5 stars Money Well Spent, May 10, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Porter-Cable PC650HD 6.5 Amp 1/2-Inch Hammer Drill (Tools & Home Improvement)
I needed a hammer drill and didn't have a lot of money to spend. Oh, it would have been great to get a high quality cordless, but they were too expensive. Once I got this jewel in my hand, I'm glad I didn't spend the money. It's lighter than a cordless and has enough torque to jump right out of my hands if I'm not careful.

I originally got this to drill some holes in reinforced concrete, in which this drill performed like a pro! I also attached a 3" auger for planting bulbs. Where I live, in North Texas, we have heavy clay soil. This drill had the power to dig down into it!

I don't regret my purchase in the least! Great tool!
