Editorial Reviews

Review

When I read Portia's Incredible Journey, it was as if the author was writing about me. I was 9 years old when my parents and I found out I had type 1 diabetes. As I read Portia's story, I felt her pain and realized that I'm not alone as a type 1 diabetic. It is a great book. --Saraolivia T. , 11 years old, 6TH grade, Monroe Math/Science Magnet, Inglewood, CA

As an educator, I know how important it is for children to read quality literature books, such as Portia's Incredible Journey, that are culturally responsive and relevant. --Beverly Jean Crosby, Principal, Fifty-Second Street Elementary School, Los Angeles, California

Portia s Incredible Journey is a heartwarming story about an eleven-year-old girl named Portia, who must brave a challenging journey of personal crisis and self-discovery, learning to understand the sun always shines after the rain is gone. With her grandma s sage advice, her perseverance, and the unconditional love of her parents, Portia blossoms into a mature young lady who learns to love and be loved. The heroine created by Ms. Emma Price is a positive role model for boys and girls facing difficult circumstances and going through their own troubles. --Wendy Li. Portia is truly a lovable character, and from page one, I was with her as she faces one crisis after another. I rooted for her as she dealt with her health challenges and cheered her on as she struggled to work out bullying problems and family issues. I can't wait for the sequel!

PORTIA'S INCREDIBLE JOURNEY is a sensitive story concerning a widespread problem among children like Portia. She is a very easy--too easy-- character to identify with as she struggles with not only a physical problem but harassment from a bully. Heart-rending and with an uplifting conclusion.

Our family loved the book! My daughters and I met Mrs. Price at a Girl Scouts event(Girltopia) in Los Angeles.I decided to purchase the book to support Mrs. Price.
The book was awesome. We found it very informative. It gave us insight to what children with diabetes may have to go through. Wow!
And without giving away too many details, we also enjoyed the underlying mystery of the book.My 14(girl), 11(boy), and 9(girl)year old
couldn't wait to find out who "baby-girl" was. Ha! Ha!
Purchase the book, you will be glad you did.

From page 1, I fell in love with Portia, the eleven-year-old heroine, whose life seems to be continually upended. When she blurts out, "It's gonna hurt. I can't do it!" she speaks for every kid who has had to dive into something he or she would rather not do. Whether giving herself insulin shots or dealing with a class bully or coming to terms with a family crisis, Portia is called upon to overcome her fears. With remarkable resilience and the love and support of her grandmother, Portia weathers the storms of an incredible year. This most readable and well-written middle grade novel is a true page-turner that leaves you wanting more.
