About the Author

Historian Richard Thompson may not have grown up to be a museum director, librarian, or trolley coordinator had it not been for the influence of his grandmother, who took him along for rides on the Oregon City Line, the states last interurban. He has been collecting streetcar photographs and memorabilia ever since that have been a resource for this volume as well as three previous books in Arcadia Publishings Images of Rail series: Portlands Streetcars, Willamette Valley Railways, and Portlands Streetcar Lines.

More About the Author

Rail historian Richard Thompson has been writing about Oregon's street railways since 1979. This interest in industrial history may come naturally, since he is a decendent of Willamette Valley millwrights and holds a Masters' Degree in history from the University of Oregon. His passion for the subject of trolleys has resulted in a collection of memorabilia that served as a resource for the three books he has written in Arcadia Publishing's "Images of Rail" series. He has also authored 15 entries for the online Oregon Encyclopedia. Thompson has worked as an archivist, historical museum director, librarian and streetcar coordinator.

A number of other interurban railways originated in Portland but were not even mentioned in this book. Some such ventures were the Willamette Valley Southern and the extensive Southern Pacific system. This book's author said they're covered in another book. Still, it would have been nice to know how extensive Portland's Interurban Railway really was.
