This is beautiful, tough, well-made china. It was actually made in Great Britain, and is by no means second quality stuff. The plates are rather deep with a rim of 3/4". The painting is crisp, and the patterns are centered on every dish (This seems to be a problem for other manufacturers to judge by the reviews.)

This set has the advantage of glasses (which I needed) rather than cups or mugs more commonly offered in sets (which I didn't need.) Portmeirion has apparently improved the highball glass quality since 2006; the glass thickness is now over 1/16" thick, and tempered. Earlier reviews had complained that the glasses were like eggshells.

It comes very well packaged in four nested boxes. However, one glass (out of eight) was chipped. Rather than send the whole set back to Amazon ($$$), I called Portmeirion USA in CT, and they sent out a new glass within a week. Customer Service for Portmeirion was very nice. The set is common enough to get replacements and expansion pieces readily, too.

The hardest thing about this set is finding flatware to go with it, as I couldn't find any recommendations. I ended up pairing it with "Medina" by Villeroy & Boch. The table looks great now. I highly recommend this set.

After reading reviews about the Portmeirion starter set, I was sold and purchased three sets! Thank you to everyone before me who helped me decide these dishes were worth purchasing. I absolutely love them and think of Amazon every time I look at them.

I waited with anticipation and when it finally arrived the product was not packaged properly. couple of the dishes were broken and I had to send the entire package back and not just the broken pieces. The place mats and the cups are made in China (just so there is no misunderstanding of the product). It would be great if the product description is more detailed. some of the portmeirions are made in China and not the same quality as the ones made in England/Brittan. Most of the collectors are particular to the country of origin.

Finally I received mine, loved all the beautiful bright colored flowery motifs. All were my favorite. I even loved the place mats which were made in China. But a salad plate had a long crack on it. Half of 4 dinner plates + 4 salad plates + 4 cereal bowls had a scrach on their back. Their quality was just about same as the ones that you could get at TJ Maxx or Marshalls. Since I couldn't get a refud only for one cracked plate and one bowl that had too many scratches on its back, I had to send entire order back to Amazon. Amazon placed a replacement order, but I have to wait for 50 days to receive this set since it's not in stock at the moment. I know it's not Amazon's fault that the set is not in stock so I have to wait for that long.. but I was very disappointed about the quality of product that Amazon sells.
--------> I called one last time to see if I could get amazon credit for the damaged plate and bowl and keep the rest of my order.. They let me..yay! I'd rather keep this than wait for 50days to get a new set. Thanks amazon for a great customer service!

A wonderful set at a moderate price. I love the glasses --- I'm supposed to drink a half dozen glasses of water a day, and the high bottom on these beautiful glasses eases the task <grin>. My only complaint is the place mats. Attractive as all get out when they arrived, but they are very fragile; they peel hopelessly if anything hot is placed on them, despite a cork bottom. Who would have guessed that a place mat would be so sensitive to a hot cup of coffee or a pot of rice?

This beautiful set arrived intact and was shipped quickly. I am very pleased with the quality of the plates, bowls, and so forth.

The glasses some have mentioned as being flimsy have now been replaced with very heavy glasses that looks to be extremely durable and functional. I doubt you will find a better set for anywhere near this price and we plan to order a second set.

The placemats are durable and beautiful. I really didn't want them but they came with the set - however, now that they are here we use them every day and enjoy them. If you are into plants this is THE dinnerware to buy -- the illustrations are absolutely tasteful and beautiful.

My wife has slowly collected Port Merion for several years, often getting peices at TJ Maxx at bargain prices. But this set was almost as good a buy, and being able to get full sets, not just odds and ends, was a real plus.
The product was very well wrapped and padded with paper and corrugate.
I was pleased, but more importantly, my wife was pleased.

Ordering was easy, delivery was quick, no breakage whatsoever.
I'm absolutely thrilled with my Portmeirion 20-piece starter set. Detail on all the pieces is amazing. I know I will be purchasing more pieces over the course of time.

The dinnerware was beautiful. My husband and I have eaten off this and that for a long time, children in the home being main reason. Now we have decided to eat in style with our "almost" adult children. The dishes arrived in a huge box, wrapped in bubble wrap, inside of cardboard boxes, and had packing paper between the dishes. Needless to say nothing was broken. The price was also cheaper than any other site. I would recommend to anyone.Portmeirion Botanic Garden New Amazon Exclusive 20pc Starter Set. Service for 4.

this is my first Botanic garden set. I 've just started to collect it.

but I wish the set has the mugs instead of glass cups.
