Amazon.com Review

Decorated for holiday feasts, these heartwarming plates from Portmeirion’s A Christmas Story line are sure to be favorites at your festivities. The pattern was created by artist Susan Winget with cheerfully bright glazing, highly detailed illustrations, and verses from the Clement C. Moore poem "’Twas the Night Before Christmas." A border of holly and a dark red rim complete the festive effect. Series 2 in the pattern, this set features the following verses around the plates’ borders:

"Mamma in her kerchief and I in my cap/Had just settled down for a long winter’s nap"
"The moon on the breast of the new fallen snow/Gave a luster of midday to objects below"
"When what to my wandering eye should appear/But a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer"
"With a little ole driver so lively and quick/I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick"

Crafted from fine translucent porcelain, the plates are substantial in weight and safe in the dishwasher, oven, and microwave. They measure 10-1/2 inches in diameter. Coordinating bowls, mugs, and serving dishes are also available. --Emily Bedard

Product Description

Acclaimed artist Susan Winget designed "A Christmas Story" for Portmeirion in 1995. It is the first and only depiction of the famous poem "Twas the Night Before Christmas" by Clement C. Moore on fine porcelain tableware and accessories. Each piece features a different scene and story line from this famous poem. Over the years, this delightful table service has become one of the most collectible series of holiday tableware on the market. Portmeirion will continue to expand the collection each year with the introduction of porcelain pieces reflecting more of the story line. This pattern continues to be a treasured collectible series passed down through generations. Set of 4 dinner plates. Series 2 portrays "And Mamma in her kerchief and I in my cap had just settled down for a long winter's nap. The moon on the breast of the new fallen snow gave a lustre of midday to objects below. When what to my wandering eye should appear but a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer. With a little old driver so lively and quick I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick"

Good Quality March 12, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase
I purchased these to go with an existing set that was purchased years ago. I was concerned they may not match because the brand name was different but it was the same style of dishes. They do all match "A Christmas Story" dishes and I am very pleased with the quality.

Love my Plates! January 6, 2008
By Barbara
I needed four more plates to complete my set, but couldn't find them anywhere. Then I checked Amazon.com and there they were! I ordered and received my plates in just a few days. Just in time for Christmas Dinner.
Thanks Amazon for the prompt and professional service.

What fun Christmas dishes January 1, 2008
I love the pictures and verses on these plates. The Christmas Story is told complete on 16 plates - two verse lines on each plate. The colors are vivid and the pictures are absolutely delightful. These dishes are so much fun to use on Christmas day.

I am not sure if they are hand painted or not. Also, not sure if they are safe to put in the dishwasher. This information would be helpful.

The only reason I did not rate the plates 5 was because they do not stack evenly. The stack was rough looking - looked like inexpensive dinnerware stacked. Also, the trim painted on the edge of the plates was not always the same - some plates showed more white. A good quality set would have been the same on all plates. You would think a company planning a series of dinnerware would make sure the design was consistant.

But, in spite of this I love the dishes and will be ordering completer pieces.
