Book Description

April 1, 2007
Portrait Drawing is a highly illustrated guide to drawing the human face, for all those learning to draw or wishing to improve their skills. John T. Freeman introduces a traditional method of teaching that uses a structured yet natural process of continuous revision based on the principle of working from the general towards the particular. This enables the student to understand not only how to do it but, more importantly, why. Written in the manner of the author's highly praised tutorials, each stage is presented in a practical and informal way, offering detailed, step-by-step guidance in all aspects of drawing the face. John T. Freeman is a professional artist and lecturer; his solo exhibitions include those at Tate Britain and the British Library.

This review is from: Portrait Drawing (Paperback)
This is just my opinion. I am not telling you not to buy this book as it may be helpful to you. I did get a little guidence on some aspects of portrait drawing, however the author is rather smug and I found I did not really want to work out of it. Not to mention I wasn't all that impressed with the drawings that were in the book. I think a begining drawing student would be intimidated and discouraged by this book. The author comes across in a way that made me feel if I didn't do things his way then I should just throw away my paper and pencils and take up photography (which as far as I'm concerned is an art in itself. I found this book discouraging rather than encouraging. This book is NOT for a beginner. I think most would find it very frustrating. I've been drawing for a few years and I can tell you there are much better books out there. Look at some others before you buy this one.
