5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome anthology
If you already have a good collection of George Dalaras' recordings, then this may not be the CD for you, unless of course you want to have some of your favorite recordings on the same disk. If I were to burn a CD of my favorite songs, it would sound a great deal like this one. This would be the perfect purchase for someone who would like an introduction to George...

If I were to burn a CD of my favorite songs, it would sound a great deal like this one. This would be the perfect purchase for someone who would like an introduction to George Dalaras, or Greek music in general. The songs on this CD capture the very heart and soul of the Greek spirit. I've had to buy three copies of this CD because I loan them out and they never come back!

In this CD you can experience the originality of greek music, which is influenced by traditional and folk music. There aren't words to describe the greatness of Dalaras' voice. It is,perhaps, the best greek singer, who's got a very passionate voice. He combines excellent technique and dynamic perfomance. He has the ability to sing a very large variety of songs. Moreover,he's a great musician, who plays excellent quitar and all the traditional greek string instruments.

5.0 out of 5 stars Musical Revelations: A Journey for the Soul, April 7, 2003
This review is from: A Portrait (Audio CD)
Modern Greek songs combine the ancient melodies and rhythms of the past with the voice of today, which creates new musical landscapes expressing universal truths. George Dalaras one of Greece's most popular and well known singers promotes the music of Greece with passion and energy like no other singer past or present ... Unlike many European countries, Greece does not adopt the prevailing pop culture of the world ... Greek music endures *because* it is based on the struggles/achievements of her past - it is an unbroken chain of music from ancient times. The universal message and appeal of the music bridges all cultures but the melodies, rhythms, and often the instruments are based on unbroken traditions. Dalaras voice is the main instrument, sincere, passionate, heartfelt, emotional... besides the bouzouki there is the violin, occasional guitar and clarinet, accompanied by orchestration to round out the music. The poetic titles of the songs reveal their contents: Konstandis, the only son; I was chosen; You were a god; Don't read my life; Take gypsy, your hammered billows; Death; The Sky Darkens; You finished me; The tough one; Your many faces; As long as the shutting door echoes; Songs are an illness ... Anyone familiar with George Dalaras will be drawn to the music by the mysterious titles alone, knowing that through his singing the mystery will gradually be revealed . Anyone unfamiliar, should listen and let this Greek musician of the soul enter and enchant you. Erika Borsos (erikab93)

George Dalaras the only Greek Worldwide Known Artist.

He is best known for composing and performing songs for various reasons, he will sing songs for his country and also for love.

He has the most powerful voice of all Greek singers and nothing can compete with his talent.

After listening to this Album you will know what he is all about.

This Album contains songs to do with love and Patriotism, of which only he can demonstrate with his powerful voice.

I Recommend this Album very highly, and a richly deserved 5 Stars.

Always looking forward to his next Masterpiece!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Too bad there are only five stars to give, July 7, 2000
This review is from: A Portrait (Audio CD)
George Dalaras is simply the best singer. When you listen to his songs you understand what greek music is about. Dalaras equals to quality music, George Dalaras is THE master of greek music. I have almost all his records *very proud* and always look forward to getting the next. I cried when I met him in personal. George Dalaras is not only the greatest singer, he is also a great Soul.

My favourite songs from this record are Issoun Theos (you were God) and Pente hronia dikasmenos (convicted for five years).

His magnificent voice will capture your heart. I HIGHLY recommend not only this record, but every record by the great George Dalaras.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dalaras is the Godfather of GREEK MUSIC, April 9, 2000
This review is from: A Portrait (Audio CD)
It could be said that once you hear George ( English spelling ) you will soon realize that his music is truly magic, genius and almost Godly... Several comments that you might think about as u are making your decision whether to buy or not buy this CD...Especially if you are new to Greek Music... 1. Dalaras has a distinctive voice ..a very deep and warm which no matter what language your native one is you will most certainly respond to his voice. 2. There is so much culture and Folk behind his songs mixing the old and the new...I am sure you need to hear this CD several times before you can argue this ... 3. I am always excited to find CDs with such great music and mostly with plenty of Songs...the most fascinating one to me is " Issoun Theos" which mean you were a GOD..such a great music and superb sound.. 4. Technically ..the CD is excellently made and it sounds pure...I love it..it make me very happy and brings so much joy to my heart I suggest you try this fanatics spiritual and uplifting fantastic Greek music CD, mostly makes you believe that there are still real music and singers modestly speaking in this world. Dalaras I solute U.......

5.0 out of 5 stars A fanatastic overview of a fantastic career, October 30, 1998
This review is from: A Portrait (Audio CD)
Georgios Dalaras, is Greece's most popular and most important musician. In that regard he has received both critical and popular praise, placing him in the rarefied air of a U2 or Bob Dylan(one of his influences.) His songs can be described as folksy, bluesy rock songs that combine and focus on traditional Greek musical themes. His lyricism and melodies are passionate and powerful and his use of lyrics from poet laureates only adds to the drama. Over the years he has worked with the likes of Peter Gabriel, Sting, and the eminent flamenco artist Paco de Lucia. Despite his popularity, he has remained very close to his blue collar roots and continues in his political and charitable activism to promote social welfare and justice in addition to advancement of the Greek ethos. A country he describes as "strange but beautiful."

5.0 out of 5 stars Singing with FEELING!, December 15, 2000
By
yippee1999 "yippee1999" (New York, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Portrait (Audio CD)
I recently returned from my first trip to Greece. One night we went to a section of Athens called Psiri, where we found a number of restaurants frequented by what appeared to be locals - not a tourist in sight! We went to two different restaurants in Psiri - one for drinks, one for dinner. Both had live music, and within minutes of my hearing such music - for basically the first time - I was totally enamored. The singing was so emotional, so genuine, so passionate!! It almost brought tears to my eyes.

So upon returning home, I was determined to find music like I'd heard. This is one of two CDs I bought, and it is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Hearing it immediately reminds me of my time in Greece. George Dalaras is wonderful.

In many respects, this style of music reminds me of what I hear playing in the background at the local Turkish restaurant, and it also reminds me of the mosque chants I'd heard while in the Middle East. If you consider yourself a passionate person, I think you'll really like this CD. Every song is wonderful. You don't have to understand Greek to understand the FEELINGS being evoked in the songs (just like they say with regards to Italian and opera).
