Book Description

November 1980
Not much about Jane Austen's personality can be gleaned from her works. It is from her letters, from the evidence of the friends and relations, and above all from a knowledge of the kind of life led and ideas held by the society she was born into, that we are to know her.

After I read this book, I truly felt that I got to know the woman behind the mask, the real OZ of Jane Austen. While reading Ms Austen's books, I always felt that Jane allowed a portion of her own traits to be portrayed in the desires of her heroine, including the good with the bad. Yet, how sure could I be?

The author of this biography on Jane Austen was able to get private letters and other data from the Austen family, and there are plenty of photos along the way. Sadly, not even ONE photo of Jane exists. He delved deep into what made Jane into the person that she became. I grew to love and respect her even more.

On a whole the book is very well written. However, I can never actually sit down and read a biography quickly. It takes me a couple of weeks. I recommend this book to anyone who has read any or all of Jane's books and who wants to know the woman behind the pen.
