5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Gorgeous Recording...., May 25, 2006
This review is from: Portrait Of Pee Wee (Audio CD)
If you are a fan of Pee Wee you MUST own this record. The recording is warm and wonderful, one of the best recordings of Pee Wee you will ever hear. The band is superb, a sort of reunion band you might say, as these sides were recorded in 1958 - long after Pee Wee's heyday - including Ruby Braff, Bud Freeman, Vic Dickebson, Nat Pierce and Karl Kiffe. Recorded like it's 1958 and played like it's 1937. Plain and simple - sweet and soulful. Nice packaging and notes, nice price.

You can get all of this album plus all of "Swingin' With Pee Wee", featuring Buck Clayton on trumpet, for about the same price by getting Swingin With Pee Wee. Great audio fidelity, and probably the best "modern" Pee Wee out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great clarinet player in suitable company, January 31, 2009
This review is from: Portrait Of Pee Wee (Audio CD)
Great stuff!
Pee Wee had one of the most distinctive sounds in jazz music and is one of the giants of classical jazz - who played distinctively within classical genres, but also ventured into modern jazz. This is a great album for trad jazz fans (Chicago school!),
with Bud Freeman, Vic Dickenson, Ruby Braff complementing Pee Wee magnificently...
But,
check out Spanish CD of "Pee Wee Russell plays with Buck Clayton, Bud Freeman and Vic Dickenson" album - it includes "A portrait of Pee Wee"!
