Wonderful Selection of Wynton's Work,
By Le Kang (Le Monde) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Portrait Of Wynton Marsalis (Audio CD)
Marsalis cannot be regarded as anything but one of the great musicians of the last few decades. His historic feat of winning Grammy awards in both the Jazz AND Classical genres is a testament to his musical genius. While Wynton's contribution and leadership in the jazz world has been of greater consequence, his classical brilliance shouldn't be overlooked. These selections are a testament to Marsalis' amazing trumpet-playing. Whatever your musical background, you will be thrilled and enthralled by his mastery of the instrument. Technically speaking, Marsalis is impeccable, with an ebullient tone to compliment his flawless technique. His virtuosic abilities are on full display in Jules Levy's "Grand Russian Fantasia", a mainstay of old virtuoso cornetists like Herbert Clarke. Also entertaining is Marsalis' take on Pachelbel's "Canon in D Major", with Marsalis dubbing himself over twice to create a soaring trumpet trio. A wonderful addition to your classical or brass collection.

A Joy,

What I like about Wynton Marsalis' trumpet sound is its shrill clear tones that give it a sort of independence no matter the orchestral accompaniment in the background. The timeless melodies of Antonio Vivaldi come to life with Marsalis playing his instrument. It's a joy to witness the handshake across the centuries between geniuses through the glory of music.

one of my favorites,
By rattfink (San Fran, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Portrait Of Wynton Marsalis (Audio CD)
my 2 favorite classical albums are "Bernstein Appalachian Spring Suite" and this one. Wynton Marsalis is unbelievably gifted and it's awesome to listen to. It's impossible how Wynton Marsalis plays Flight of the Bumblebee, blows me away everytime I hear it.4 stars, not 5 because last few tracks aren't that great, but 14 out of 17 MONEY tracks makes this one of my alltime favs.
