5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Bargain! July 8, 2010
For the longest time I had been looking at the DGG CD "Arpa Espanola", long out of print, listed immediately below this Zabaleta 2-disc set. Back in 1972 I bought it on vinyl, and it has remained one of my favorites ever since. Until recently the DGG version was available only from a few secondary sellers. One in Florida wants over $200 for a new CD. For some unknown reason, the DGG version became available again around June 24, for $20.49 (current price), and I immediately ordered it. For some reason it won't ship for 4 to 6 weeks.
But let's get to the Zabaleta release....
I ordered that the same day, and within a week it arrived from Europe, with German postage and an invoice in French. When I opened the set, lo and behold, the 2nd CD is exactly the same as the DGG copy mentioned above! And sure enough, in the small print on the back cover, is the DGG recording copyright info. I'm wondering if there might be a copyright situation that's delaying the DGG release. All too often, DGG releases only so many, and when they're gone, they're gone. The CD may appear years later in a cheaper edition, but given the situation with classical music these days, well, don't hold your breath.
Zabaleta was a great harpist and his reputation will live on, especially in the pieces represented on the second CD. One reviewer called it "gypsy" music, which is off the mark. It is classical Spanish at its best, performed by an artist with few equals. The recording is truly "Brilliant", with sound clear as a bell and every bit as good as that on the DGG release.
Now, Amazon wants 55.99 for this CD set, which seems a bit over the top. I say go with this 13.99 version from Europe, or wait (and hope) for the DGG version. BTW, I didn't much care for the Bach and Handel concertos on CD 1.
