Best D'Rivera's Recording,
By Ben Nothingham (Boston. Mass) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Portraits of Cuba (Audio CD)
Portraits of Cuba is a classic! What rhythms and exotic sounds emerge from this classic recording! Band, soloist D'Rivera and conductor Franzetti are all in sync with this great afro-cuban jazz. No, no salsa or samba(! ) or danzo bonzo here; there's just great music and pure talent. Grammy winner 1997 Best Latin Jazz Performance - a real winner for D'Rivera and company.

This is probably D'Rivera's best effort in years. His most serious playing without being derivative or so keen into the millionth-notes fiery style. Carlos Franzetti wrote some of the most inspired charts of his now illustrious musical career. Portraits is an amazing project.

A nice mellow sound for background music, but nothing with salsa to make you want to samba or such. No Latin or African influences are audible.
