5.0 out of 5 stars Informative and Delightful History, September 15, 2011
This review is from: King Dinis of Portugal and the Alfonsine Heritage (American University Studies. Series IX, History, Vol 69) (Hardcover)
After doing quite a bit of research on my personal family genealogy, I became interested in the historical events surrounding and influencing the Spanish and Portuguese people. Quite by chance I found King Dinis of Portugal and the Alfonsine Heritage and am completely delighted. Most of my Portuguese study has involved translating with very limited knowledge of much beyond English. Although I had a basic knowledge of the facts, Ms. Ackerlind succinctly and plainly explains the politics of the time, the machinations of the various family members, the duel relationship of the public and private court, and the surprising and wonderful legacies of the rulers of both Castile-Leon and Portugal. The often confusing repetitions of names and varieties in spelling are clearly explained. The lengthy bibliography gives great ideas for further reading. I love all of the poetry and appreciate that she has these works in their original language. The royal genealogy table is very helpful. This book will be a springboard for much further study. Thank you Ms. Ackerlind for helping me connect the past to my present.
