My favorite Portuguese text so far (as a teacher),

I have been teaching Portuguese as a private tutor for years and I was very glad to come across this book. I think it contains a great balance between communicative activities (like dialogs and questions for conversation) and some grammar instruction. The latter is done as simply as possible (i.e., they will rely on pictures and examples, rather then lengthy textual explanation to get their point across, whenever possible). I also found it very comprehensive, covering the more obvious major topics (different verb tenses etc.), but also smaller points, such as contractions (do, no etc.) and a lot of idiomatic expressions. It is also useful for a variety of levels: it really is useful for the very beginner to advanced intermediate levels. I think there is only one thing to beware: everything is written in Portuguese (no English whatsoever), so it may be difficult to use if you are teaching yourself. Better used if you either have a teacher/ tutor or if you are teaching yourself at an intermediate level.

There are not many Brasilian Portuguese text books on the market, and I think this book is above average. The figures and practice dialouge sections are good, although the exercises are a bit dull.

I got this book for a class, and it has served its purpose. It is a perfectly good, very traditional introduction to Brazilian Portuguese. It only teaches Brazilian Portuguese. It is a bit dry, and contains relatively little cultural information. Also, with the exception of the preface, which is in 4 languages, the book is in Portuguese only. It is well enough put together that this is not a huge problem, but if you like explanations in English, you won't find them here. Students familiar with another Romance language will have no problems, but those without any background will not be so lucky.
There are other, newer books on the market that provide at least a passing introduction to Continental Portuguese, and I would recommend them. This book is fine, and I have learned using it, but I could have done better.
