4.0 out of 5 stars Easy to use and effective, but limited without a text book
This program is a good way to learn to pronounce and understand a few phrases in Portuguese. It is an effective way to learn the language, although the vocabulary is limited.

It definately does not have the coverage, background and vocabulary of a course that has a printed book to go with it, and I missed that. I need to know how to read and pronouce words too,...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to Pimsleur's technique, but . . .
This four tape (eight lessons) set will not teach you enough Portuguese to be useful. This review is from: Portuguese (Brazilian) 8 Lessons (Basic) (Audio Cassette)
This program is a good way to learn to pronounce and understand a few phrases in Portuguese. It is an effective way to learn the language, although the vocabulary is limited.

It definately does not have the coverage, background and vocabulary of a course that has a printed book to go with it, and I missed that. I need to know how to read and pronouce words too, or I can't use a language dictionary!

However, it is very effective if you don't have the time or discipline to devote 30-60 minutes a day to doing nothing but study a language. With this method, you can listen to the tape while doing somthing else.

Be aware that the full beginners course of 30 tapes cost $300, and this is just the beginning of that.
