4.0 out of 5 stars Brazilizn Portuguese
Nicely divided for easy access to common words/phrases. Now possible to correspond fairly well with Brazilian acquaintance. Book is nice size for toting and reading. Good-sized font. Able to study without magnifying glass. Clear distinct print. rose

5.0 out of 5 stars Great!, October 8, 2007
This review is from: Brazilian Portuguese-English Dictionary & Phrasebook (Hippocrene Dictionary & Phrasebooks) (Paperback)
This book has a ton of great information. It has a pretty extensive dictionary, important phrases, key verb conjugations. It's really easy to use and explains everything clearly. I am teaching myself Brazilian portuguese and this book is an excellent supplement to other learning materials.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor excuse for a dictionary, April 17, 2010

Although this book does offer useful information on Brazil and the language, it is a sad excuse for a dictionary. More like a vocabulary list than anything.
The worst aspect of this book is its description of Brazilian pronunciation; it bears absolutely no resemblance to the way Brazilians actually speak (no mention of the softening of the T and D in certain situations, like the final d in saudade, for example).
Very misleading and not worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really good book!, July 11, 2008

It has Brazilian-Portuguese to English and vice-versa. It also includes LOADS of other info like useful phrases, proper grammar useage, conjugating verbs, prepositions etc, a pronunciation guide, asking questions, and some general facts about Brazil.

Also includes travel help sections such as restaurants, transportation, shopping, entertainment and even safety (Brazil is not the safest country in the world).

There is a list of things NOT to say or do as well. For example, the American "A-Okay" (sign formed with the thumb and forefinger making a circle) is a big insult in Brazil. Better to use a thumbs-up!

Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Reliable, August 20, 2011
This review is from: Brazilian Portuguese-English Dictionary & Phrasebook (Hippocrene Dictionary & Phrasebooks) (Paperback)
As the title suggests, this is a (mini)dictionary first but also a phrasebook. There are 122 pages for the two-way English-(Brazilian)Portuguese 'dictionary' and 109 pages for the phrasebook. Both are comprehensive (within the space available) and contain practically everything a traveler may need. There are also pronunciation and grammar pages as well as an introduction to Brazil as a country. Some topics crop up on different pages. In addition to a section for money (p 183-9), money matters also appear under hotel, tipping, shopping, etc. As a small criticism, the information on directions (one page at the end) could have been more detailed, but this is nevertheless a very useful book. The copy I have, 2007 reprint, does not contain the mistakes some reviewers have complained about. Also, although mainly designed to be used by the visitor to Brazil, this book is written in an educated Portuguese that can be used anywhere where Portuguese is spoken.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this, July 31, 2011

This review is from: Brazilian Portuguese-English Dictionary & Phrasebook (Hippocrene Dictionary & Phrasebooks) (Paperback)
This is not a proper Dictionary. It only defines words from Portuguese to English and is in no sense adequate enough to help you learn the language. I would highly suggest putting your money into any other dictionary but this. I feel this is the kind of dictionary people buy to waste their money and are not interested in learning language. The layout is difficult to follow and as whole the book is a joke. I had to borrow this dictionary from a friend while I travelled in Brazil and had to give it back because it was better to go without it than to carry something around that was a waste of space!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful with building vocabulary, December 8, 2009

This review is from: Brazilian Portuguese-English Dictionary & Phrasebook (Hippocrene Dictionary & Phrasebooks) (Paperback)
I bought this dictionary for a Brazilian friend who already speaks and reads some English. It is most helpful for filling in the gaps in his vocabulary, but does not include many pronunciation or usage details. It is great for when he is reading and runs across an unfamiliar English word, and simply wants to know what the word means. For pronunciation and usage, a dictionary such as the Larousse Concise Dictionary gives more information. I gave my friend both dictionaries, and he mainly uses this one, then refers to the Larousse for details when needed.

It is OK as such books go, but is missing the pronunciation for each word although there is a pronunciation guide at the front. I bought it because of the difference between Brazilian and Portuguese pronunciation.
