Choosing the "perfect" dog for your family can be a daunting task. Everything from the way a dog looks, acts, its size and its activity level needs to be taken into account. When President Obama's family considered getting a dog, it was a very serious process. Perhaps welcoming a dog into the household is not as complicated as foreign policy, but important nonetheless. Hmmmm . . . a dog that is big. That's fine. How about a dog with a lot of energy? Well, the Obama family is energetic. How about a dog that is "playful and curious?" Sounds really good because Sasha and Malia would enjoy that. How about a dog "with lots of smarts and true-blue loyalty?" Senator Ted Kennedy loved this breed and gave them a pup because . . . Portuguese Water Dogs are the BEST!

This gorgeous dog looks a little like an "overgrown fluff ball." They come in an assortment of colors, but Bo, the Obama PWD, is predominantly black with white markings. In this book you will learn about their super swimming ability, how the Obama's chose the name "Bo" for their PWD, you'll learn they are very family oriented, they are in the "working dog" category, their origins, you'll meet a rare peanut-sniffing dog, you'll see a photograph of Senator Kennedy with his two PWDs, you'll learn how much exercise they need, what type of family they do best with, their physical characteristics, what items you'll need to have when you welcome one into your home, the importance of veterinarian care, what to feed them and more!

I loved reading this book about the Portuguese Water dog so much I think I read it at least three times. The way it is set up is very appealing and it is obvious that the book was well researched and accurate. There are a few scattered, informative sidebars throughout the book and it is peppered with lots of "I just gotta have this dog" photographs. The author does stress the need for a proper family fit and this dog may not be for everyone. In the back of the book is an index, a glossary and additional recommended book and website resources. Do you know what Michelle Obama's father's nickname was? If you do, you may know why they named their PWD "Bo!"
