Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

The word "position" has long been used in the field of social psychology. Now social psychologists are creating new theories on group positioning by studying everyday language and discourse and the application of some of these ideas has revealed the necessity of paying close attention to the local moral order within which both public and private intentional acts are performed. The study of local moral orders as ever-shifting patterns of rights and obligations of speaking and acting has come to be called by a new name - positioning theory - of which Rom Harré is one of the leading exponents.

In this book, Rom Harré give a state of the art overview of positioning theory via contributions from some of the world's leading experts in the field.

About the Author

Rom Harré is Fellow of Linacre College, Oxford, and Professor of Psychology at Georgetown University. His numerous publications include The Explorations of Social Behaviour, Social Being, Personal Being, Physical Being and Varieties of Realism.

This review is from: Positioning Theory: Moral Contexts of International Action (Paperback)
As an individual investigating positioning from a linguistic viewpoint, this book provides a great theoretical framework through which to look at identity from a linguistic perspective.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beyond Social Constructionism...., January 2, 2001
By
Sara Cobb (Cambridge, MA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Positioning Theory: Moral Contexts of International Action (Paperback)
This is an excellent book---I have used it in classes so it is very readable, but not simple. With this book, we have the basis for a normative theory for evaluating morality in discourse, moving beyond the relativism of non-normative approaches to social constructionism. I am also using it as a framework to understand identity-based conflicts.
