5.0 out of 5 stars Great Advice for Raising a Capable Teen
My daughter is just becoming a teenager, and I am glad I purchased this book at this time. It has helped me to identify my enabling behaviors that maintain her dependence on me. I am now working to empower my daughter to become more independent in her decision making. This book is presented in a very logical format and the suggestions are easily implemented. I have...

2.0 out of 5 stars Did not like
I did not like the book. It did have some interesting points to consider, but it did not seem like discipline to me. I am more of a Love and Logic fan. I think kids cannot always see the natural consequences of their own behavior (or don't care) until far into the future and must sometimes have consequences imposed upon them, which this book says not to do. I just...

This review is from: Positive Discipline for Teenagers: Empowering Your Teen and Yourself Through Kind and Firm Parenting (Paperback)
I have never used punishment as a motivator with my daughter and now feel vindicated in that choice. I encourage parents of teens to get this book for a refreshingly alternative approach to interacting with our teens - treating them like the individuals that they are. Good luck!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent information, practical, upbeat, real-life examples, November 4, 1997

This review is from: Positive Discipline for Teenagers: Empowering Your Teen and Yourself Through Kind and Firm Parenting (Paperback)
I found this book to be very informative as well as giving great real-life examples; These are helpful in deciding how to talk to your teen in a way that makes them NOT want to tune you out, but also doesn't make them feel ashamed or bad. I would recommend it for any parent who is not sure how to approach problems and conflicts with their teenager--and doesn't want to create a chasm between them.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book on teen discipline, March 9, 1999

This review is from: Positive Discipline for Teenagers: Empowering Your Teen and Yourself Through Kind and Firm Parenting (Paperback)
I present workshops for parents and teachers of teenagers, in the Los Angeles area. I have researched many books, all of which have valuable information. What makes this book different, is the format. It is easy to look up a problem and find the resolution. Parents and teachers have found it invaluable.Dealing with teenagers can be a trying proposition. They are adults-in-training and need all the guidance and patience we can give them. With the help of this book, I have been successful with the workshop presentations.

5.0 out of 5 stars extremely helpful!, October 21, 2007
This book is exactly what we needed. My son just turned 15 and my husband who's very controlling still treated him like a child giving him little or no space to develop on his own. It was getting scary between them. They would fight often and my son threatened to run away. I bought two copies so we could both read it before someone got hurt! It's helped to open our eyes and realize it's OK for kids to make some mistakes. This book is a must for anyone who thinks that controlling your kids every move is the way to go. It also discusses the opposite parenting styles and helps create a balance. If you have a teen you need this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, October 9, 2001
The authors map out clear, effective and proven strategies for rewarding parenting in this excellent well-written guide. An imaginative approach was called for when my 16 year old boy Jonathan threatened to barricade himself in his bedroom using just twigs, leaves, and his own spittle and dung, and this guide provided just that. There's nothing wrong with setting parameters, the authors say, just as long as that are not arbitrary or capricious and they are clearly articulated - and for crying out loud why should he be allowed to act like a nesting African Hornbill under my roof?

Whether your teen is simply refusing to clean his room, or your worried about tougher issues such as sex and drugs, this book teaches parents effective and respectful ways to deal with the whole child.
This is not a "How To" book with a lot of simple, short-term solutions. It is a basic parenting philosophy which, once understood, will permeate your decision making and way of being with your child.

Let me start with this, I wish I had read this book earlier but still not late. This book has provided me a right path to deal with my teenagers and grow them in a positive discipline environment with respect. This book teaches you to build confidence, self respect and faith in your kids. For me, this book has been a great resource and provided me all guidance I was looking for to deal with my teenagers. I highly recommend this book to anyone with teenagers. I am so impressed with this book that I am thinking to order audio copy of positive discipline to listen in my car when I am driving.
