Most retail loss prevention publications and material on the market today are directed specifically to retail executives, owner/operators, or associated loss prevention personnel. Mr. Tilley's recent book and entry to this market, however, has chosen to address two of the major components in the retailing shrinkage equation - shoplifting and employee theft - from a unique perspective. Mr. Tilley has put together a very comprehensive instructional primer, with a workbook review format at the end of each chapter, which is designed to be put directly into the hands of each and every front-line employee, in any retail operation. This book introduces the employee to the basic concepts of retail shrinkage and the cause and effect of everyday losses. More importantly, the book introduces the front-line employee to those simple, but invaluable, time-tested techniques, by which he or she can become an important and intrinsic part of the store's loss prevention program. Most of those loss prevention applications and situation solutions discussed in this primer have an added and common denominator benefit for the retailer - improved customer service.

The coverage on Loss due to external factors is fair but not deep enough. So only suitable as a first reading for someone who is new to retailing. The coverage about Internal theft is far from satisfactory !!

Excellent overview - few details,

An excellent overview of the current thinking of corporate retail loss prevention. This is an excellent primer for retail loss prevention as it is espoused by most large corporations. It gives few "in depth" details - this should not guide you in how to achieve this condition (if it does, you're just starting out or else you're in serious trouble). However, this gives an excellent introduction to the new loss prevention specialist. "Hands on" instruction should follow the reading of this book.

Positive Loss Prevention is a great way to introduce employees to the topic of Loss Prevention.It is clearly written and gives a very practical approach to training employees. Its extremely positive approach is a departure from the majority of books written on the subject.It takes the participant through fourteen quality chapters with the appropiate workbooks for them to complete.When they have completed the book the employee can obtain a certificate of accomplishment.I believe this book can be a great asset for the retailer and for emoployee training. Training employees is the key in adding to bottom line profit by reducing losses.Ralph Manno District Manager

Easy to read, easy to understand. The ideas are straightforward and easy to implement. Most retail companies have pieces of this information in their own handbooks. Now you can provide your people a complete training guide for less than $25. Your company will look more professional and your people will be better trained. The result is less theft and more competent staff. The real result is more satisfied customers.

I found this book a good aid for training employees in Loss Prevention. The book has an easy flow and the worksheets at the end of each chapter bring the important issues home! The book has a unique approach to teach employees about Loss Prevention. I think all types of businesses would benefit from this information.

Great book for employees in small to medium retail store,

I found this to be an innovative, creative and thoroughly new approach to training employees on Loss Prevention. There is very little written material which can be said to contain many of the basics the new and the not so new employee requires in todays retail environment. I liked the program instruction approach as it keeps the employee focus giving them immediate feedback. There is also a very interesting added feature every person who completes the evaluation card in the back of the book is sent a certificate recognizing the completion of the training session. This is a very functional and well thought out approach and with training dollars at a premium this is an excellent way of getting the message over efficiently and economically.
