Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Promoting children's self-esteem is Joslin's operative principle, and while that's certainly a sought-after goal in most modern child-rearing manuals, Joslin's A-to-Z plan for achieving it sets her book apart. Drawing on 20 years worth of teaching parenting classes and listening to parents' problems, Joslin sets down general guidelines and specific strategies for dealing with 140 different situations. The entries, which are divided into three parts (the first defines a particular behavior; the second explains how to deal with it; the third suggests how to prevent it), run the gamut from adoption to yelling and include dialogue, which is set in italics, that can be used practically verbatim when parents find themselves at a loss for words. Joslin even suggests some helpful books to use when a situation needs more clarification. With the alphabetical format making it especially easy to use, this will be a helpful down-to-earth book for diffusing those all-too-frequent parent-child power struggles and perhaps stopping a few before they start. 4.0 out of 5 stars A helpful reference book., June 17, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Positive Parenting from A to Z (Paperback)
Lots of suggestions on how to handle typical behavior and discipline issues. Each topic has three sections: Understanding the situation, What to say and do and Preventive tips. Gives enough information to help you decide what to do. Just a bit wordy, but overall quite good. Another great A-Z reference book is Perfect Parenting, The Dictionary of 1000 Parent Tips by Elizabeth Pantley.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for parents of Add/Adhd children, December 31, 1998

This review is from: Positive Parenting from A to Z (Paperback)
Add/Adhd children need more structuralized tasks and this book is a wonderful book for doing just that. With 150+/- problems in one book we can find the answers right in this book from adoption questions to Zoo (and other outings). The section on cleaning the bedroom was a real big life saver. Thanks Karen for your help.

I am a therapist and buy and recommend this book for many of my clients. It helps so much to develop new parenting skills that increase awareness of what the child is feeling and how to approach an issue without injuring a child's sense of self.
