More About the Author

Nancy Willard, M.S., J.D. has degrees in special education and law. She taught emotionally disturbed students. She also worked in the area of computer law and then shifted to educational technology planning. Then, students started using the Internet in school--and there was a need for someone with combined expertise in the areas of youth risk behavior, technology use, and legal issues.

Along this path, Nancy realized that it is impossible to address issues of bullying in the school environment or when using digital technologies, using a 20th Century "rules and punishment" approach. Nancy presents a 21st Century approach to address the age old problem of bullying by ensuring a positive school climate, engaging students as full participants in the effort, and resolving negative incidents in a positive and restorative manner.

Nancy has always been a leader in safety for students. This guide is a must have resource for anyone working with kids and dealing with bullying, peer aggression and harassment. One of the best parts of the book is her action plan framework. As schools and organizations work on policies and procedures for dealing with bullying, peer aggression and minimizing the harmful effects they have on students, this framework is essential for assisting in that process.

Nancy Willard's guidance and expertise have provided practical advice to me as a school principal and educational leadership professor for several years. Knowing the research behind her work and finding that it supports my work using peer leadership as a strong component for bullying prevention, gives me confidence in the work we do in our school district every day. Positive Relations gets at the heart of building a school climate that will help all children reach their academic as well as their social and emotional goals. Feel free to take a peek at my picture book that helps children understand these ideas. http://www.amazon.com/Stand-Up-Lisa-Roth-M-D/dp/1475169671

We have used Nancy Willard's approach in our Middle and High school and at other Middle and High schools in our state. Her positive social norms approach to prevention makes sense to students, families and administrators alike, leading to high levels of buy in and involvement by multiple stakeholders. Nancy Willard's approach utilizes local data directly from students to involve students in the process of creating their own school climate and culture. Given a say, students overwhelmingly desire peaceful, supportive environments that promote learning; given an opportunity to participate in creating their schools climate and culture they are a powerful and positive force for good, and a significant asset to their school.
