I have been a fan of Bob Dylan since the 1960s. I don't like every song that he has churned out, but this song is one of his best. I heard "Positively 4th Street" during my teen years, meaning that the music and lyrics hit me at a time when I was vulnerable, my mind was often in turmoil, and I was forming crucial adolescent friendships. The piping sound of the organ, the supporting guitars, the punctuating percusssion, and Dylan's sarcastic tongue hit me where I lived. The lyrics caused me to examine my own relationships, especially with people who didn't seem to care a lot for me! In other words, I loved this song as a teenager, and still go back to it when someone disappoints me! |
