This review is from: 12 Positively Stiff Dylans! (Audio CD)
Loud and fast takes on the best Dylan rockers from 1965 (give or take). The (N)obsoletes are obviously true believers and had a ball bashing out these tunes. The liner notes are a discourse on "Why punk rockers hate Bob Dylan" and the music is a grand argument why they should reconsider. This is the most fun I've had listening to a CD in a while. If you like this, check out "Is This Progress?" by the Obsoletes, one of the most refreshing straight-ahead rock bands around, featuring former members of Yesterday's Kids, the Benjamins and Boris the Sprinkler.

Yesterday I took my 5 most recent "Dylan Covers" cds and went for a long ride. I collect Dylan cover songs and the cds I have range from amazing to half-hearted. When "Positively 12 Stiff Dylans!" came on, I was immediately caught off guard. ( You will be too, but I won't say why - I don't won't to spoil a moment for you). Nob Dylan & The Obsoletes"?! How could this possibly be serious, much less good? I am here to tell you that this is an A+ effort. These guys get it. They don't "cover" Dylan - they run inside the songs and own them. Don't look for ballads here. These songs are flat out rock and roll. The "spoken word" comments are priceless and the twist they put on "Desolation Row" is unbelievable! Ok - that is an overused word but it fits here - unbelievable! No one has ever had the attitude to take on that song the way these guys do. I collect versions of "Desolation Row"?. This one stands alone - and for very different reasons. I treasure this cd and would give anything to see these guys perform live. I know some will disagree with this review - and that's to be expected. But if you love rock and roll and you love bands that "get" Dylan's rock and roll and you admire bands that can grasp Dylan on a level not often heard, then this one is for you!
