Editorial Reviews

Mario Van Peebles, Billy Zane and Stephen Baldwin shake up the frontier in this "fast-paced, star-studded, big brawny Western"(Janet Maslin,TheNewYork Times)! Filled with gun-blazing, fist-pounding action and co-starring Big Daddy Kane, Blair Underwood, Tone Loc, Pam Grier, Isaac Hayes, Nipsey Russell, Aaron Neville and more, Posse takes a page missing from the history books - and unfolds it with suspense, humor and awe-inspiring power! In 1892, a group of mostly black infantrymen, betrayed by their white commander, Colonel Graham (Zane), desert the Spanish-American War. With Graham hot on their trail, Jessie Lee (Van Peebles) leads the men to his hometown, Freemanville, only to find it's also besieged by war - a racist war! Lee's attempts to bring justice and freedom to his people make for a brilliant Western that's short on words and long on "killer entertainment" (Los Angeles Times)!

4.0 out of 5 stars Correcting History. April 1, 2002
Format:VHS Tape
Mario Van Peebles directed and starred in this film about a group of African-American soldiers (and one white one) on the run from a corrupt military officer. The officer (Billy Zane) had the posse steal some gold from Cuba during the Spanish-American War. He planned to kill them afterwards, but the group proved stronger than he thought and they escaped. They come back to the states and follow Jesse (Van Peebles) to the dream town of his deceased father in west Texas. Jesse has some inner demons to silence and they won't be still until he has settled an aged score.
The film is interesting. However, the movie relies heavily upon typical Western cliches which dampen some of the it's uniqueness. Nevertheless, the film does raise awareness about all the black cowboys and settlers that were so instrumental in taming the West that most people don't even know existed. An educational film that is quite entertaining to watch.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well done, lots of familiar faces.. April 2, 2014
Format:Amazon Instant Video
This was a good western with authentic sets. Van Peebles puts in a great performance. It is difficult to see the conditions of black soldiers, cowboys and pilgrims back then but this is a movie where the good guys win. A lot of fun to see so many actors that were on TV in the 70's & 80's and even Issac Hayes! Recommended.

It tells the forgotten story of the black cowboys of the west you have to watch it to understand, Im not going to write a long review about the movie, because everyone is a critic so just see for yourself you be the judge.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fairly Good Movie With Pacing problems June 30, 2014
Format:DVD
While I liked this movie I found that it had pacing problems.

The plot was spot on and so was the time period. There has never been a Western that took place in 1898. Indeed, the West was supposedly won by 1890. Despite this, there were still many cowboys roaming about the West.

Mario Van Peebles is an incredible filmmaker. I liked his touch of adding the late great Woody Strode as an elderly man recounting the tale. I also liked how he included the late Stephen J. Cannell as a gambler in the movie. That was a nod to the producer for his starting Van Peeble's career in the 1980s. Sonny Spoon was the vehicle that got Van Peebles on the map.

Unfortunately by the end of the movie most of the characters are killed. I felt this detracted from the movie's feeling. Stephen Baldwin and Tone Loc were good, but they were inexplicably killed off. Tone Loc was killed in New Orleans and his "friends" just abandoned him in order to chase after Mario Van Peeble's character. What kind of friends were they?

Overall, I give this film a Three and a Half Star rating. If you like Westerns you may like this film.

3.0 out of 5 stars POSSE June 22, 2014
Format:Amazon Instant Video
I did not finish the movie, not sure why guess I just did not enjoy it. On the positive side it did give me some insight into what our country may have been like back then.

4.0 out of 5 stars a good movie June 11, 2014
Format:Amazon Instant Video
It was a good movie and very informative about the old west. I would watch it again but some of it just didn't set well as far as acting to me.
