About the Artist

The band was originally formed back in 1990 as a primitive garage act and made their first public appearance on a local compilation CD in 1992. In 1993 the band recorded the new infamous Forever Heaven Gone demo with it's dark and brutal sound. It received some underground attention and got the band a gig at the Hultsfred-Festival alongside major acts like THE RAMONES and ENTOMBED. The band had now grown into better songwriters and musicians and the result was a very brutal, intense and evil Death Metal sound but with a lot more feeling and melody to it. Some zines wrote that it was a perfect mix between the American and Scandinavian sound... This led to a deal with the new Swedish metal label Black Sun Records. The debut CD The Burning featured songs from both the demos alongside some new material and was praised as being one of the strongest and most brutal albums of 1995.

In January/February of 1998 THE CROWN hit the road and raised some serious hell alongside SACRILEGE featuring Tomas Lindberg (ex-AT THE GATES). After having seen a show on this European tour, a member of the Metal Blade Records team was very impressed; even after having a beer kicked in his face by singer Johan, and after some conspiring with Satan a deal was made between the hellish band and the legendary metal label.

In early 2001 singer Johan Lindstrand decided to leave the band after eleven years and taking his place was legendary Tomas Lindberg (ex-AT THE GATES). After destroying some summer festivals in 2001 the bands fifth album Crowned In Terror was recorded and released in April 2002. Crowned In Terror was heavily praised by both the media and fans as being one of the best releases of the year gaining the band the cover feature of Metal Maniacs. After a US tour with DARKEST HOUR as the support the band headed back to Sweden where after a show in Stockholm Tomas Lindberg and the band parted ways mutually. The band still had some festivals to play so the original singer Johan offered to help out until a full time replacement could be found. The shows went very well so one hazy night at a bar guitarist Marko asked Johan if he would be interested in being the full time singer once again... and his answer was yes! So in the fall of 2002 THE CROWN was back with the original line-up and ready to make some waves in the heavy metal community.

While new material was being written, smaller tours were played in Finland, Italy, and then a two-week tour all over Europe. In May 2003 the new album was recorded at Studio Fredman. As it marks the 13th anniversary of the band and contains 13 tracks, the album was appropriately titled POSSESSED 13. On this album THE CROWN sums up all that they are about on one great album. It is a total tribute to all that they have done. Filled with brand new riffs next to specially selected and finely matured 13-year-old riffs ripped up from the unreleased past and awoken in a new deadly fashion as only THE CROWN can do. The power of this album is striking, classic catchy old-school riffs in a fresh new way of sound and song making. The artwork is just as deadly as the music itself, made by the locust constructions responsible for the infamous "Crenom" t-shirt design. It is a total Hammer Horror concept; white, black, and blood stained! There will also be a black limited edition deluxe version with a bonus disc with 13 previously unreleased demo tracks where you can hear some of the Possessed 13 tracks in their original form. *Note- American release will be the double disc in jewel case; the single disc in the white packaging will be available as an import only.* Music off the new album has already been unleashed upon tens of thousands of dirty metalheads at the 2003 Wacken Open Air festival and was received with a very warm welcome. Possessed 13 will be unleashed on the world on the 21st of October 2003 so lock up your daughters, pray to God and send more cops... THE CROWN has arrived!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars R.I.P. THE CROWN 1990-2004, March 16, 2004

Mud Bog "King Kloy" (Cary, NC United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Possessed 13 (Dlx) (Audio CD)
On March 7th, Heavy Death Metal's The Crown, after reuniting with original vokillist Johan and releasing a badass 13th anniv. album, announced they were breaking up. Not because of any inner turmoil, (that left with Tompa), just that there was no money coming in (the reason Johan left after Deathrace). Poorly managed tours (which, along with merchandise, is where most musicians money comes from. NOT ALBUM SALES!) kept the band eternally paying bills, so the boys decided to try life outside The Crown. BEST OF LUCK, THANK YOU FOR KEEPING IT HELL!!
Okay, so they leave us with Possessed 13, 13 tracks (26 if you have the 2 disc like me) that kick serious ass, serving as a reminder of real heavy metal attitude. The production on this is heavy.
The songs allegedly are a mix of new ideas and reworked ideas from their demos (hence why the second disc has their 2 demos and rarities). Face of Destruction is probably the most standout track although I LOVE Kill Em All. The instru-metals rock too.
The second disc contains the first recorded song, Forever Heaven Gone and Forget the Light demos, an ASTOUNDING cover of a Bathory demo called Burning Leather and an alternate mix of Rebel Angel. I personally would like to have had the Slayer cover (Mandatory Suicide) and their version of Arise from a Sepultura tribute, both of which Ive never heard. The demos were later recrecorded and made up the bulk of The Crown's first cd The Burning. Not my favorite Crown material but cool to have as a Crown Completist or fan of early 90's swedish death metal.
REST IN PEACE OH CROWN OF THORNS!!!

When I bought this CD I knew that it would be good but I had no idea just HOW good it was. This is probably the Crown's best CD to date even slightly edging Deathrace King. I personally can't think of a more brutal thrash CD to come along in a very long time. This is better that Slaughter of the Soul and rivals even Reign in Blood. Real metal fans will be left wanting more. Metallica fans should just keep moving.

4.0 out of 5 stars 2003 CD of the year material, December 23, 2003
This review is from: Possessed 13 (Dlx) (Audio CD)
Johan's return is obviously a factor in this effort. How many bands re-record a previous CD to welcome the return of aformer member? (as it is reported that The Crown will re-record "Crowned in Terror" with Johan- not just redub the vocals; RE-RECORD the ENTIRE CD!) The energy from this CD is excellent. The songwriting is good, but the performance on this CD is absolutely amazing. Packaged with the bonus CD tracks, "Possessed 13" is a Metal Maniac Must Have!! Can't get it out of my CD player! I'm listening to it as I write, ready to jump into the PIT!! (Don't think my boss would like a Mosh Pit in the middle of the office). If you're reading this, two words- BUY IT!!
