5.0 out of 5 stars Broadway is POSSESSED!, October 8, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Possessed: The Dracula Musical (1990 Studio Cast) (Audio CD)
Here is a musical that you would never imagine being full of the most inspiring ballads since Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera. Here is a musical that is playful with voices such as the talents of Stephen Soundheim's Assassins. Here is a musical that takes a taboo subject that fits as comfortable playing in your house as does your couch for lounging. Here is a musical that will have you possessed by it's beauty, fantasy, fun and excitement. Here is a musical I find stuck on the same album in my IPOD because I can't help myself from playing it over and over again. Here is a musical you must own.

I bought it from Monsterman1954, one of Amazon's trusted sellers. It was delivered right on time in brand new sealed condition. Here are some background facts of the artists on Possessed The Dracula Musical, their characters and their individual acheivments as artists.
Thomas Young as Dracula has played Che¢ in Evita and male lead in numerous Broadway roles as well as performing in the ensemble of 3 Mo¢ Tenors. His seductive voice as Dracula is so alluring he brings you into his world where you fall hopelessly for him.

Katharine Buffaloe as Mina Seward has played Christine in The Phantom of the Opera, Maria in West Side Story, Julie Jordan in Carousel, toured Japan as Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady, co wrote an album for John Tesh plus more and now plucks our heart out as the most beautiful prize for Dracula. Her voice is silken gold and you can almost see her breasts plunging out of her finest purple tie-up dress calling for Dracula`s touch.

Carter Cathcart did all the orchestrations and all the instrumental performances. He plays Jonathan Renfield, Dr. Seward, Prof. Van
Helsing, Bloombury the Attendant. His characters are frightened, frightening, funny and fabulous. They all bring that gothic who done it sense to this play and have you roaring as Professor Helsing or frightened as Bloombury the Attendant. Amusing characters or breathtaking ballads he is critical to the lyricist Jason Darrow's work and delivers above and beyond Darrow's wildest dreams. His achievements are too many and too fine to fit in this review.

Marilyn Pasekoff who plays Dottie the Maid reminds us of Angela Lansbury in Sweeney Todd for her cockney accent. She is so funny as the maid but also passes over to us a little fear to tuck in our stomachs. She received critical acclaim for her portrayals of Patti LuPone, Ethyl Merman and Jennifer Holliday in Forbidden Broadway. She's still involved in many musical projects singing, acting and as a playwright. There's probably a product she sold you with her commercial voice in your house.
Galen Brandt as Lucy Harker is the innocent who can not resist the lure of Dracula. Her dear friend Mina tries to save her but in the precious song TWO DIFFERENT PEOPLE they win our support as they savor soul wrenching dreams into a flawless enchanting ballad. With strong voices and characters we learn they are captive to Dracula's insistent charm and we see one let go and one fight. Galen Brandt has creatively worked for Walt Disney Productions as a music director, composer and vocalist, radio and TV for which she won a French Emmy for Best TV Series. Again more talents back up this wonderful Lady. She is Lucy Harker.

Jason Darrow our impeccable lyricist here and co-writer of Possessed The Dracula Musical has given us a taste of Heaven through the conception of a spawn from Hell. When one thinks of the title and subject one cannot imagine the beautiful story and heart-filled ballads that have come from this masterpiece. He also gives us funky fun in the fabulous song LOVE SUCKS which makes you want to start dancing and have a party. In SEWARD SANATORIUM we are thrown around in laughter as we see this created world is not far from our own crazy world. His ballads are sheer genius. Here again way too many awards, achievements and projects I could write about but what I most want to convey is the treasure in finding Possessed The Dracula Musical. Mr. Darrow is currently in New York working on his new Novel.

Robert Marasco is another wit of the pen as co-writer of this stunning, one-day, classic piece of Broadway history. As author of the Broadway hit Child's Play he proudly watch it win 5 Tony Awards. This smashing book for this play will see him again full of devilish pride as Possessed The Dracula Musical shall surely garner just as many but I believe a lot more. Space, once again limits his achievements.

Go get Possessed The Dracula Musical then tell me if Broadway has found a new vehicle it can ride for years. Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars An "Eternity" of terrific music, May 27, 2001

There have been many attempts at writing a musical based on Dracula, none very successful. This is one of the best though. The singers are great, particularly Thomas Young(before i heard this CD i had never heard anyone quite like him), and the songs are extremely funny, creative and haunting(which, i guess, should be a key aspect in a musical based on Dracula). My personal favorites were "Eternity" and "Master of the Living and the Dead" sung by Dracula(Thomas Young), "Something Beautiful" sung by John Harker(Galen Brandt) and "Only a Dream" sung by John Harker and Mina(Katherine Bufalloe). Those were all very haunting songs, but there are also songs that will have you laughing your head off, such as "Birds of a Feather" a duet sung by the maid and attendent, "Bonkers/Bangers" sung by Renfield and Dr. Seward, and "Beleive in the Unknown" sung by Seward and Van Helsing. Then there are the up-beat songs that just make you feel good, like "Best Time" sung by the company, and "Salvation" sung by Renfield. All in all, this is a terrific CD to, what i can only assume having not seen it, a terrific musical. I recommend it to fans of Dracula, Musical Theatre, and gothic music.

5.0 out of 5 stars YOU DEFINATELY FIND GREAT THINGS WHEN YOU AREN'T LOOKING!, January 13, 2000

I went into a store this week to look at Broadway soundtracks and came across this gem. I had only heard of Possessed once and that was when a friend of mine told me that she was playing Lucy in it. When I saw it, I picked it up instantly. The music in this show is phenomenal. I loved every minute of it and I've been listening to it over and over. One of my favorite songs is 'Eternity', sung by Dracula. Thomas Young's voice is outstanding. And Lucy and Mina's song, 'Two Different People' was also a testament to the music and lyric writers' talents. My favorite musical is Jekyll & Hyde, and now Possessed is ranked right next to it. I've always been interested in the old Hollywood movies, and now Broadway has brought two of my favorites to musical status. I recommend this to anyone and everyone. Check out Possessed. You won't regret it!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best Dracula based musical, April 28, 2009

I'm not one for many words, but if you like gothic horror type musicals I can reccomend this whole heartedly. The songs are smooth and the lyrics quite memorable. The voices fit each of the parts and it's just all around fun to listen to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Miraculous, December 31, 2007
This review is from: Possessed: The Dracula Musical (1990 Studio Cast) (Audio CD)
I bought this CD from the sellers and I could not be happier! This is a frist rate production and this is quite evident from the very frist notes of the overture. Jason Darrow and Jack Cathcart have really created a genuine thought provoking pieice of work. The songs are beautiful and harmonious in the appropriate places. And the story works well too. Three cheers to you all in making the best CD I have bought in years!

Since getting this from Jason Darrow, It is rarely out of my CD player...Carter Cathcart has written and arranged all tracks, and sings on many of the tracks....His rendition of Salvation as Renfield is superb....."I Want To Be Free" and "Something Beautiful" are beautifully done by Carter...Jason's lyrics couldn't be better; he and Carter make an awesome team.
"Believe In The Unknown" and "Seward's Sanatorium" add some humor to the CD as well. You won't regret buying this CD....

I AM AN OLDER LISTENER, AND I'VE NOT LIKED A LOT OF THE POP MUSIC COMING TO BWAY IN RECENT SEASONS. MAMMA MIA AND HAIRSPRAY WERE FUN, BUT POSSESSED, ABOUT WHICH I'D HEARD GOOD THINGS, REALLY CONVINCED ME THERE CAN BE ROOM IN THEATRE FOR CONTEMPORARY MUSIC, BE IT ROCK OR POP. WHEN IT'S AS MELODIC AND WELL CRAFTED AS THIS MUSIC AND LYRICS ARE. THOMAS YOUNG AND KATHARINE BUFFALO ARE SENSATIONAL SINGERS WHO KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH A SOLILOQUY. THE OTHER DRACULAS ON THE WAY TO BROADWAY WILL HAVE A ROUGH TIME TOPPING THIS EXCELLENT ADAPTATION OF BRAM STOKER'S GREAT NOVEL.
