3.0 out of 5 stars So-So
I think I must have picked up this title a few years ago and there it sat on my shelf until now.

Good points: There was a plot. There was romance. The characters were likeable. It was a quick read.

so-so points: The sex was rather tame for a story taking place at an "exclusive gentlemen's resort". I didn't much care for the sexual language...

4.0 out of 5 stars HOT! With A Plot!!, September 5, 2004

"The Possession" is the rare erotic novel - it is well written and actually has a plot on which to hang some varied, sensual and sizzling prose. And this is one hot piece of fiction! There are also two main characters who are very likable, instead of the usual one-dimensional fare. Some of the secondary characters are intriguing also. Anonymous intimacy is a factor here, but romance plays a big part in the plot - which I, personally, enjoy.

Kris Torrence, a prim, proper professor of anthropology, is 30-something, single with no love interest in sight and bored. Underneath all her propriety and professionalism, is a passionate, beautiful redhead, longing to do something wild and crazy for once. Her libido is alive but stifled...and really needs some exercise. She sees an advertisement for Hotel Atlantis, an exclusive resort for wealthy gentlemen, situated on a private island off the San Francisco coast. The owner is looking for attractive women, "exceptional females," to be "submissives" for a week. The salary is phenomenal. But money is definitely not why Kris applies for the job.

Jack McKenna is the bane of Kris' existence. He is a wealthy businessman who finances a lot of the research in the anthropology department where Kris works - and he's a super hunk! They argue and snap at each other every time they're together, but they have a strong mutual attraction. He is a close friend of Hotel Atlantis' owner and his vacation, surprisingly coincides with Kris' week-long adventure. Sparks fly! And fantasies come true - for the reader also!!

I read "The Possession" in a few hours. Jaid Black knows how to tell a steamy tale, and her use of humor is wonderful. The prose is graphic and deals with exhibitionism, voyeurism, light bondage, etc., etc., and some of the language is explicit. Highly recommended for those who like erotic fiction, but not for the faint of heart! Enjoy the wild ride!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!, April 7, 2002
By
"king187" (cornelia, ga United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Possession (CD-ROM)
If you haven't yet ventured into the world of erotic romance then you'll be hooked forever once you've read the work of this author. I love all of her books, and look forward with great anticipation to her new releases. The Possession is Ms. Black's newest contemporary, and it just goes to show that this author has more than a few tricks up her sleeve when it comes to weaving an erotic and romantic tale. If you're tired of the same old hum-drum formulaic seduction scenes in your romantica tales, then get ready to be pleasantly surprised by the decidedly 'unformulaic' twists and turns to be found in The Possession.

In The Possession, Kris Torrence - a single, 34-year-old professor of anthropology has a problem; She's bored. Completely and utterly bored. She's tired of being a straight-laced, well-bred, always-do-the-right-thing kind of girl. She's ready to let down her hair and experience the wilder side of life...no matter what it takes.

A classified ad in a newspaper for an island resort catches her eye and imagination. It seems that Hotel Atlantis is looking for select females to work in their 'gentleman's' resort situated off the coast of San Francisco. Kris has heard of the posh island retreat, and knows just what kind of working girl the advirtisment is aimed towards. She isn't even surprised to read the words - "Women comfortable in the role of submissive are especially needed" - typed clearly at the bottom of the ad.
Although Kris is an indepentdant, intelligent, and hardworking single girl, she cannot deny the heated rush of pleasure the thought of being submissive to a man brings washing through her. With no small amount of excitement, and before she can have a chance to change her mind, Kris applies for the week long postion...and to her surprise is hired almost on the spot.

Kris is assured by John Calder, Hotel Atlantis' owner, that her identity as a college professor will stay a secret while she works for him, as the club only caters to the richest sort of men - hardly the type of man she would know in her normal, hum-drum lifestyle. Little does Kris know that her long time nemesis, and secret crush, Jack McKenna, is close friends with the island resort's owner, and that he plans on spending the week at the resort relaxing and tasting of the pleasures that Hotel Atlantis has to offer. Understandably, when Kris sees Jack across the hotel lobby her first night there, she is stunned and seeks to flee before he recognizes her.

I won't give away anymore, but I admit that it's hard not to :) You'll have to read it for yourself. Suffice it to say that this book is HOT. Hot hot hot!! As always is the case with a Jaid Black novel you'll be entranced with her understanding of human nature, and the secret desires of women. Be prepared to fall in love with the secondary characters as well - I hope she does a sequel featuring John Calder. This is a rich, evocative tale...as well as a steamy and sensual erotica, and I loved it!

I also reccomend her other books, ESPECIALLY the erotic paranormal/sci-fi Trek M'Qan series staring with book 1 The Empress' New Clothes. Once you've read Black you'll never go back! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars An enthralling sizzler!! Yum..., March 15, 2004
This review is from: The Possession (Paperback)
It wasn't easy finding this book. It wasn't available at bookshops and I wanted to get the paperback, not the CD-Rom version. Boy, am I glad that I didn't give up on it! The Possession is one of the sexiest, steamiest, well-written erotic romance novels out there! Jaid Black is right up Emma Holly's alley when it comes to writing risque, unconventional romance novels. Kris Torrence is an anthropologist who has had it with her uneventful life of academia. She wants to do something out of the ordinary for once in her life. And what could be less ordinary than traveling to a private gentleman's resort to fulfill her lifetime fantasy of experiencing sexual submission? She will leave her five cats behind and make the unconventional trip. She'll also be able to forget the rough and gorgeous Jack McKenna, her longtime nemesis. But she and Jake get more than they bargain for at the resort...

The building of tension and subsequent sex scenes awoke all of my senses. This novel has the most smoldering erotic scenes I've ever read. And the best part is that Ms. Black does not sacrifice story development and characterization in favor of gratuitous sex scenes. In fact, there are no gratuitous sex scenes here -- there is a perfect blend of plot, erotica, romance and humor. And I love the fact that Jack McKenna isn't the typical perfect hero. He makes Kensington Brava's bad boys seem like sissies. I'm flabbergasted. This book was worth waiting for. I shall definitely read Jaid Black's other efforts with gusto!

5.0 out of 5 stars "The Posession" is steamy and erotic!, June 27, 2005
This review is from: The Possession (Paperback)
Dr. Kris Torrence is a reserved woman with strong sexual fantasies that she's never acted out. Feeling like life is passing her by, she decides to take drastic measures and signs up for a stay at an exclusive gentleman's resort where she can experience the submissive acts she longs for, yet keep her identity a secret at the same time. All she has to do is get through the day and her adventure will begin. But first she must deal with the infuriating Jack McKenna, the bane of her existence. Their heated encounters leave her feeling edgy and reluctantly aroused. But Kris would never get involved with a man who would expect complete obedience from her, not just in the bedroom. She's too strong-willed for that.

Jack McKenna loves redheads, and this one drives him absolutely crazy, though he can't figure out why. He wants a willing and submissive woman, one who will welcome his dominance instead of fighting it, and Kris was the exact opposite of what he's looking for, but he can't stop fantasizing about her. Determined to get her out of his system, he goes to Hotel Atlantis to drown in the pleasures the prissy Dr. Torrence would never understand. Only once he's there, he becomes intrigued by a sexy redhead who strongly reminds him of the doctor, only he cannot see her face. Undaunted, he pursues her, convinced she may get him over his obsession. As you can imagine, the two discover each other amidst the hedonism of the island, and after many challenges to keep them apart, they ultimately end up spending the rest of their time on the island together, and the results are explosive, wild and sexy, and will leave you breathless.

Jaid Black is not the Queen of Steam for nothing! This book is not for someone who enjoys sweet romances with your average amount of sensuality. "The Possession" is about the taking over of a willing captive by a dominating man in an exploration of supposedly forbidden sexual fantasies. While not completely about submission, this story does touch faintly on the subject of bondage and is a great start for someone slowly exploring these types of scenarios. If you are looking for hard-core submission and/or multiple partners, you will not find it in this book. This type of story is more of an erotic romance, with a traditional happy ending for two people who just happen to strongly enjoy the spicier side of lovemaking. It's a happy medium for those who enjoy explicit sex scenes in their romances, and opening the doors to new experiences. The language is raw and uncensored, however that may enhance the story for some readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hot! Sexy! Tender! DON'T MISS, March 15, 2004
This review is from: The Possession (Paperback)
This is one hot book. It centers on one relationship, so it appealed to the romantic in me. There was no group sex or partner changes. Instead the focus is on two people falling in love and having great sex. It is a short book, so don't expect a lot of emotional build-up. Have I mentioned the hot sex? Check this one out if you like your erotica with a little love and tenderness.

5.0 out of 5 stars For those who would not normally read BDSM, July 28, 2002
This review is from: The Possession (CD-ROM)
Although this is about the heroine acting out her fantasy of being a sexual slave, it's a fun read, not dark, but certainly hot! Don't let the sex slave plot turn you away from this enjoyable erotic story. If BDSM normally turns you off, try this author, Jaid Black. She can make you laugh when the hero threatens to spank the heroine because she's not being a very good slave. This is one woman one man heterosexual romance in a kinky Fantasy Island setting. Lots of steam. Lots of laughs.

4.0 out of 5 stars steamy and seductive, June 8, 2005
This review is from: The Possession (Paperback)
I actually picked this book out from another recommendation list that was on Amazon.com. I am very glad that I did. The postman brought it to my door and within and hour I was done. Definately a page turner. If you are into erotic fiction, this is the thing for you. The sex was definately vivid and wonderful. The only thing that kept me from giving it 5 stars was that the plot was TOO predicatable. I'm not gonna give it away, but if you're curious to know, definately buy the book. :)

4.0 out of 5 stars A completely ridiculous yet sexy fantasy...., December 10, 2008
By
Holly R (Las Vegas, NV) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)
This review is from: The Possession (Paperback)
Tired of her boring and sedate reputation, Dr. Kris Torrence wants to experience something crazy and erotic. So when she finds an ad looking for submissive women to work at an extremely exclusive gentleman's resort, she decides, what the hell, she's got a lot of vacation time coming to her. Even though she's essentially being hired as a well paid prostitute, it's the submissive part that catches her eye. The chance to live out her most secret fantasies while in complete anonymity seems too good to be true. She arrives at the island resort and sheds her drab persona and is soon heartily enjoying the touch of knowing male hands. Then she turns around and faces her most despised adversary. Jack McKenna has been the bane of her daylight hours for the last two years and the secret star of her nighttime fantasies. When she's put on the auction block, to be sold to the highest bidder for three days and nights of sexual servitude, Jack is determined to be the only man to possess her. He's determined to bring this proud and independent woman to her knees (literally) and once he has her there, he can't wait to show her how good it can be for both of them.

Okay. Once I started reading, one word popped out to me. Asinine. This story was completely asinine. Stupid is too harsh of a word. Silly seemed too provincial. So I'm going with asinine.

Everything was hot and spicy until I got to the island resort and then I realized that the fun and games that I had been breathlessly waiting for was in actuality...erotic carnival games?! As in pin the d*ck in the p*ssy and rubber ducky booths. WTF? This was weird. It was sexy in a weird way, but I was too busy Rolling On The Floor, Laughing My A** Off to really appreciate the sexiness at the time. ;)

I really enjoyed this story. It's not particularly long, only about one hundred and forty pages, but it's a simple love story where our protagonists have to test their mettle and the strength of their desire by rounds of arm wrestling and oil slickened body wrestling. Even though it sounds completely asinine, it was really funny and, yes, hot.

Once the carnival games end and the auction is over, it's back to one on one between Jack and Kris. There isn't much in the way of D/s or M/s or BDSM for that matter. Jack just seemed to be a bossy and possessive male. But it was still extremely sexy, especially in the fact that Jack doesn't want the new and sexy redheaded wanton who has been driving him out of his mind for the last couple of days. He wants the staid and boring Dr. Kris Torrence, who has been haunting his dreams for two years, and when they finally face off against each other, it was incredibly erotic.

I recommend this story as a rolicking good time. It was definitely funny and definitely sexy. Just go with the flow and enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost terrific by Jodi, May 23, 2005
By
J. Rice "Jodi" (Walnut Creek, CA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Possession (Paperback)
The first 150 pages were all a bondage devotee could ask for - believable protagonists, very explicit sex, growing excitement and anticipation of ever higher levels of decadent behavior - in short eminently readable story with an S&M flavor. Unfortunately, the concluding segment of the story descends into straight sexuality, romance, marriage as a happy ending, and even visions of babies to come. Ms Black clearly appreciates lots of enthusiastic 2 way oral sex, and as one who has a nice amount of real submissive experience with men, women, and transexuals, I could readily empathize with the heroine Krissy. Overall, a quick and delightful read.

4.0 out of 5 stars good but not great, December 5, 2008
This review is from: The Possession (Paperback)
I read this a while ago and have been debating whether to give it 3 stars or 4. The things I like about it, I like a lot - the steamy D/s sexuality, Jaid Black's touches of humor. Both Kris and Jack are well-drawn and likable. I love a surly hero and Jack is wonderfully surly!

The plot is simple but sufficient for an erotic romance: a staid professor wants to experience the submissive side of her personality in an anonymous setting. Of course her nemesis, the very guy she's been verbally battling with for the past 2 years, shows up in the same place. He's been secretly lusting after her all this time, natch.

So what didn't I like? There's a whole lot of exhibitionism going on, the heroine (and all the women) are naked for the whole week at the resort, and the heroine gets fondled by men other than the hero. (Note the heroine does not actually have sex with any other man. And there are no ménages).

The biggest problem is that 9/10 of the book is a lead up to the moment when Kris gets auctioned off and must sexually serve the hero for 3 days. I'm thinking yummm. But except for some light bondage, the sex turns out to be very vanilla. No spanking, no butt play, just the hero demanding a BJ. It was a bit unsatisfying and felt rather rushed too, considering all the build-up.

Nevertheless I did enjoy reading this book, so in the final reckoning I'm giving it 4 stars :-)
