Possession of Souls takes you on another amazing roller coaster ride of emotions. The ending left me speechless - I feel like I really can't say much more without giving anything away. I just want to say that this may be the best Young Adult series that I have read, the writing and emotion put into these stories is just amazing. ~Tishia Mackey, Paranormal Opinion

1.0 out of 5 stars Abusing Women is FUN February 8, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Loved the series in general, but man, what happened to book 5?!

First of all, Vance is emotionally and physically abusive to Portia, and no matter what form the abuse takes in the story, it's the same tired old lines - "oh I'm sorry I beat the crap out of you, it was for your own good AND I was drunk so I didn't know what I was doing, it won't happen again". And then the girl says to her concerned family/friends "Oh he's changed, it won't happen again". Until the next time he almost kills her. Yeah, ok, she loves him, but at what point is that no longer a valid excuse for what he's doing to her?

It concerns me because this is meant to be a YA novel, but this novel in particular is like a blueprint for how a young girl can get herself into an abusive, co-dependent relationship with an addict who will try to kill her. It's kind of sick.

Also...geez...okay, so Vance is this superhero magicest most bestest wicked bad powerful warlock on the planet, right? He ended up with the power of "dozens and maybe even hundreds of the most powerful witches and warlocks Damien could find" (from book 2 I believe), AND the Awakening (which is pretty WOO HOO). So the author's saying he's got this phenomonal cosmic power, and yet if someone rubs goo on him and chants in non-English, poof it goes away, and he can't do anything about it. Heck, he's CONSTANTLY brough low by a simple shot of some sleepy-time juice and that's all anyone needs to kidnap him and hook him up with 'charmed handcuffs' or whatever, and he can't fight it. He's as weak as a kitten. C'mon!

Thinking about it, through out the series, while there's magic MENTIONED a lot, there's not a whole lot of actual magic being worked. Yeah, tables and chairs get whooshed around, and every third page someone is healing someone else, and the kids bounce fireballs and ice shards off things, and that's about it. I was hoping for some *major* crafting, or examples of fun powers they picked up, like shape changing or so on. They pretty much don't progress more than walking on air and wooshing fire or ice. Yawn. The bad guys had WAY cooler powers than they did. So not fair!

How about they learn to become better at their magic as the books progress? How about they learn something more than fireballs and ice shards and saying "I love you"? How about they, I dunno, create a magical shield that stops Bad Guys from stabbing them in the neck with a common hypodermic needle? How about they actually USE all this big magic we keep hearing about, instead of just weeping and eating each other and being abusive?

So yeah, the first 2 or 3 books were really good. The 4th was wobbly. The 5th is a festival of poor decision making, spousal abuse, addiction issues, and how to NOT use your magic to save your butt.

And, by the way, sometimes it's okay to let the girl win. Sometimes, maybe, I'm just sayin'.

Abyssmal series ending to a great series start. "I am dissapoint."

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful series finale!! January 4, 2012
By Tishia
Format:Paperback
Possession of Souls is the fifth book in Lacey Weatherford's YA paranormal series, Of Witches and Warlocks. This is the final installment of Vance and Portia's breathtaking love story. They not only have to deal with life and death situations, but also their relationship with each other as they are being held captive.

This book will have you in suspense the entire time, wondering what will happen next. The stresses of their situation leave Vance and Portia struggling with their own relationship, and these scenes between them seem just as dire as the life and death situations.

Vance has had such a burden put on him, it would make any normal person go crazy. He grows a lot in this book, putting aside his wants and needs in order to do what he thinks is right. It takes a lot of work and effort to get past his inner demon. Every thing that he goes through just makes you love him even more.

Vance and Portia are one of my favorite book-couples of all time, but I am glad that things weren't blissful between them 100% of the time. These obstacles made the book that much more interesting and suspenseful, and also made their love even stronger. Despite everything, their connection was sizzling more than ever. They had some HOT, yet PG scenes.

This book takes you on another amazing roller coaster ride of emotions. There were happy moments, sad moments, sweet moments, sexy moments... The ending left me speechless - I feel like I really can't say much more without giving anything away. I just want to say that this may be the best Young Adult series that I have read, the writing and emotion put into these stories is just amazing. I'm really sad to see this series end - I feel like I actually know these characters and I'm going to miss reading about them. If you like any kind of paranormal romances, even if you're not a young adult anymore, I seriously suggest you giving this series a try. I don't think you'll regret it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Enough Already! May 29, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have read all of the books in this series and I must commend the author for her vivid imagination. BUT... I am so sick of reading about bruised and swollen lips because Vance and Portia can't keep their hands off each other. One thing I am very grateful for is that, throughout the series, the author refrained from any graphic descriptions of sexual congress. I'm sure this is because of the assumed ages of her readers but the attraction between the two protagonists, even it is enhanced by a 'binding spell' just became sick-making to me. And limp-biscuit Portia, no matter how vile and disgusting Vance becomes, is 'always there' for him. In any other genre this relationship would be viewed as abusive in all capital letters.

I was so fed up with all the snogging going on that, in this book (and the other books), I could only take so much. I had to skip to the end to see how everyone turned out and left it at that. Maybe one of these days I'll go back and read the middle of the book, but not any time soon.

I read this book on my Kindle and like most books formatted for Kindle there are some egregious typos which someone had kindly underlined to my glee.

More About the Author

Lacey Weatherford was born in Ft. Meade Maryland while her father was serving in the military. She has been a life long resident of Arizona, spending most of her time growing up in the small rural town of Clay Springs.
It was while she was attending the small country school in Clay Springs, that she read her first "big" book at the age of eight. It was a Nancy Drew novel and Lacey was instantly hooked. She read every book that she could find in the series and decided that she wanted to write stories too.
Lacey spent a lot of time at the library from that time forward, even volunteering in her later teen years and early twenties. She would don a crazy clown outfit for the Friends of the Library fundraisers in an effort to help get the new town library built.
When she and her husband moved away from the area, Lacey took the opportunity to take some creative writing classes at the local college to help further along her interests. Several years later, they were blessed with the opportunity to move back to Clay Springs with their family. The town had finally succeeded in building their library and Lacey had the opportunity to be President of the Friends of the Library for a very short time, before relocating.
Lacey and her family still live in the White Mountains of Arizona, where she continues to write young adult novels that have a fantasy/fairytale or paranormal bent to them, as well as being sure to include a great romantic storyline!
