Product Description
Eighty years ago, bodiless entities brought a plague of violence and bloodshed to the planet Vulcan. The nightmare ended only when the entities were trapped inside special containers. Now, on the eve of a galaxy-scale scientific exposition, the containers have been opened, freeing the malevolent entities to possess the minds and bodies of all they encounter, including the crew of the Starship Enterprise-. Friends turn into foes, and no one can be trusted as Captain Picard faces a deadly and insidious threat. Unless the entities can be stopped once more, they will spread their madness throughout the entire federation.

From the Publisher
Eighty years ago, bodiless alien entities brought a plague of violence and bloodshed to the planet Vulcan. The terror was ended only when the entities were trapped in special containers and walled away behind forcefields. But now, some greedy Ferengi have opened the containers, releasing the rapacious entities to possess the bodies of the EnterpriseTM crew. No one can be trusted -- anyone could be host to one of the alien things -- and Captain Picard must devise a way to defeat the entities before they spread throughout the Federation.

5.0 out of 5 stars awesome, October 7, 1997
By A Customer
This book was one of the best books that I have read in a long time. I have read a lot of Star Trek books, and this one left most of them in the dust. The summary may not seem that great, but the writing was excellent. Many of the ideas in the book got deeper and deeper until you threw the book away from you in fear that something was going to "get" you. I did that several times, and each time I came back within a minute to finish reading the book. I recommend this book to everyone, especially those with knowledge on Star Trek.

1.0 out of 5 stars A rushed job full of contradictions and repitition., February 28, 2007
By the4thpip (Florida) - See all my reviews
"Possession" was evidently written by two women who were having a fight and not talking to each other anymore. You could always count on finding a detail that would contradict something from a previous chapter. One chapter everybody on board goes into a medically induced 36 hour sleep, a few hours later a guard is easily captured because he "has not slept in two days." Hello?? First that new android has eyes that are superior to Data's, then the opposite is true.
And then the authors must have been told by an editor that it was 50 pages too short for a ST novel, so they started adding in redundant sentences and additional adjectives like "he attacked her fiercely and savagely." (or words to that effect).
My favorite sentence went something like "Worf could not imagine that kind of senseless warfare, it was beyond his imagination."

So no, I would not call this well written. It was one of the most painful reading experiences I have ever had. There are much better Star Trek novels out there to spend your money on.

3.0 out of 5 stars Possessed by Possession, July 17, 2003
By jrmspnc (Maryland, USA) - See all my reviews
It's been quite a while since I've read a J.M. Dillard Trek book (over five years, in fact), so I'd largely forgotten how skillfully she draws readers in, thrashes them about for a bit, then lets them go, weary but satisfied. That's precisely what Dillard does in Possession, putting our Next Gen heroes into what is, in many respects, a horror novel where noone can be trusted and all are suspect.

Alien, bodiless entities are on the loose. They feed off of pain and anger, so those infected, "possessed", tend to engage in acts of brutal violence, while using their hosts memories to aid them in a galactic takeover. The crew falls one by one, and don't be surprised if you find yourself yelling, "Save them, Data! Save them!" This one keeps the heart rate up.

However, when all is said and done Possession is not extraordinary. We've seen alien possession time and time again on TV (the one where Data, O'Brien, and Troi get possessed springs to mind), and the plot of Possession isn't terribly original. Possession stands out for its portrayal of Deanna - one of the best ever - but once it's over that's pretty much all that will linger in the mind.

So, Possession rates a standard Trek three-star, a book that will be greatly enjoyed while you're reading it, but that you're likely to forget. An earlier Dillard novel, Demons, is a case on point. Other reviewers have suggested that Possessions is a sequel to Demons. Having read Demons over a decade ago, I can recall nothing of it beyond having liked it very much. I suspect Possessions will end up the same.
