Not too long ago, the Dallas music scene was quite a hopeful place. Deep Blue Something, The Toadies, The Nixons, and Tripping Daisy were all getting national attention, and the line of deserving hopefuls was long. I should know - I stood in that line. Ultimately, the supply outweighed the demand and many great bands that deserved national attention broke up and died off.Chomsky was born during this time. They were one of the bands that I had genuine respect for. They wrote killer, singable songs with brainy lyrics (some of which rank amongst my favorite songs of all time), they played the heck out of their instruments, and never compromised their concept. In fact, unlike many other bands that were around at this time, they exhibited patience and self-restraint in a climate of what could only be called a feeding frenzy. They were careful about what they played and where they played it. When the scene self-destructed, Chomsky laid dormant, quietly maturing. After a couple of years they burst back on the scene with "A Few Possible Selections..." an irresistable collection of your favorite songs that you never knew you liked. I respected them as peers when I worked alongside them, but this CD has a polish and maturity that destroys the work that I thought that they could not improve on. Favorite tracks: Warm, 2 Steps, Road. These are the ones that will jump out at you. Then, after you listen some more, you will find other tracks that you grow to like, i.e. Mason or Need. Eventually, the whole danged thing will be your favorite CD and you'll be telling other people "I told you so". I have bought probably fifteen copies of their CD for people and everyone I know is blown away by its consistency. If you can, find a way to see them live. In addition to writing melodic, hooky power pop of the highest quality and originality (think Weezer & the Foo Fighters meets XTC plus something extra), Chomsky has some of the best and most original players in the Metroplex. Their shows are electrifying and entertaining. Get this now before it becomes a collector's item, and be prepared for their upcoming release. You heard it here.

I remember the first time I saw Chomsky at the Wreck Room in Fort worth...they had to tear me away from the front of the stage. But before we left, I bought a cd. Kicking & screaming they dragged me from the building. I was HOOKED! The next day I put A Few Possible Selections... in my cd player & cried my way through the first song "Two Steps." I didn't expect the quality of production. Many unknown bands play a kick [rear]live show, but then you listen to the album & feel cheated. Chomsky DOESN'T CHEAT! They put the time, effort, creativity & beauty into their live & recorded work. And this album is definately beautiful. Make sure you check out their newest release Onward Quirky Soldiers.... it's even better!

Best album of 1999,
By Michael Thomas (San Antonio, Texas) - See all my reviews

There were lots of good records in 1999. However, once I heard this one, I couldn't stop listening to it. Over and over, until I had to give it credit as my favorite of that year. Sean Halleck writes thoughtful lyrics and catchy tunes. The other members throw in their magic, and they create some of the best songs since Pixies hung up their guitars. They are also one of the best live bands ever! Powerful and energetic. Guitarist Glen Reynolds lets the music overtake him and he flys about the room, giving the audience an amazing dose of power. You will feel this power too. If you like good music with loads of character, then you need this album. You will not be disapointed. Be the first on your block to gloat that you heard them before they went big....unless you're reading this after their first arena tour.Awesome stuff.
