5.0 out of 5 stars Impress Your Friends!, March 9, 2002
By
"xiao_ma" (Sydney, Australia, not Austria.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Possum Dixon (Audio CD)
I discovered Possum Dixon at 3:30 one Sunday morning in 1995. "Watch The Girl Destroy Me" was screened on our late night music TV program, and by the time Robert Zabrecky launched into the chorus for the 3rd time, I had become a fan. Were they one hit wonders? No - fortunately the album didn't turn out to be an exercise in pop-music futility, as upon listening to their debut LP, the self titled "Possum Dixon," each track offered up jingly-jangly guitars, humourous lyrics, and memorable, hummable, irresistable choruses. About 9 of the 11 songs on this album could have been released as singles, no kidding. The album became an instant party favourite during the Summer, what with singing/shouting/pleading choruses like "Marry me baby/ sleep with me baby/ we'll sleep with the lights on/ and we'll sleep with our clothes on."
Possum Dixon are yet another band who exist between genres; who cannot be pigeonholed too easily into punk, alternative rock, or pop music, but who nevertheless don't make you sorry that you took the effort to buy their record.
I come back to this record every 6 months, and every time it sounds as fresh, as relevant, and as personal as it did when I first found it. "Nerves" is a well constructed anthem to those who find themselves in a dead-end day job, and who maintain a social life; In Buildings (she makes me shake now) contains a whizz-bang wet-your-pants chord progression; Watch The Girl I hope you've heard by now; She Drives is an up-tempo junk-rock tale infused with harmonica and the hook "you look like a picture from a magazine." I can only think of a young, energetic, American version of Elvis Costello and the Attractions when I am asked to explain what Possum Dixon sounds like.

5.0 out of 5 stars A rare gem in a display case full of 90's gravel, February 5, 2003

John C (Broken Arrow, OK) - See all my reviews

Amazingly I met the band in Tulsa by accident when they were doing an in-store performance at Mohawk Music (R.I.P.). They were loading up their van and I asked them who they were and then bought one of their c.d.'s and had them sign it without even knowing what they sounded like (they were great guys). All that aside, the c.d. is incredible, quick, intelligent, well-written and certainly worthy of more accolades than I could ever put forth. If you can find this c.d., buy it, first because it is awesome and secondly because its probably in a bargain bin near you.

5.0 out of 5 stars I miss this band, August 27, 2008
This review is from: Possum Dixon (Audio CD)
I own thousands of albums and CD's, and this CD seems to never grow old.
Possum Dixon was one of my favortie bands of all time. I cringe when I see it laying in a used or bargain bin now for $1.00. I feel like grabbing a customer and telling them "buy this, or you will miss out".
Every song is good but I think my favorite is Pharmaceutical Itch.
About as close to perfection as a CD can get.
